Now streaming exclusively on Netflix. After being thrown a bone by Warner being able to bring his version of “Justice League,” he’s announced that these versions of his alleged “Star Wars Killers” known as “Rebel Moon” as more or less unofficial. They’re still movies in a sense, but not in his mind. He’s allegedly planning to release Director’s Cuts for both films, which includes potentially longer scenes and alternate takes on various scenes. So what is even the point of this whole shebang? Snyder is less an auteur and feels so much more a brand manager trying to figure out an algorithm for a ..read more

BOOTLEG FILES 862: “Our Town” (1955 television musical production starring Frank Sinatra, Paul Newman and Eva Marie Saint). LAST SEEN: On YouTube. AMERICAN HOME VIDEO: None. REASON FOR BOOTLEG STATUS: It’s complicated. CHANCES OF SEEING A COMMERCIAL DVD RELEASE: Not likely. One of the most prestigious and ambitious series in the history of American television was “Producers’ Showcase,” which ran from 1954 to 1957 and offered live 90-minute plays starring A-list talent. The series aired every fourth Monday of the month and a total of 37 episodes were created. An unusual feature of the show was ..read more

On Blu-ray April 23rd and currently on Digital from Well Go USA    A newly unemployed journalist starts a podcast and investigates large stones that have been showing up suddenly in random people’s lives.  Written by Lucy Campbell and directed by Matt Vesely, the film takes a deep dive into obsession, alien conspiracies, and a touch of body horror along with some scandals that are often better left alone. Considering the current situation with conspiracies, podcasts, investigations by seemingly random people, the solitude in most people’s lives, this film is very timely. The pan ..read more

BOB (2022)

Inspired by a true story, Drew Bierut’s romance comedy is one of the most charming tales of fate and random scenarios I’ve seen in a long time. Although the movie posits itself as this bizarre concept, it amounts to a surprisingly funny, engaging and warm romance comedy that explores how sometimes we can end up meeting our perfect person in the most unlikely places. Everything about “Bob” is so well conducted from the direction, top notch performances, and ace comic timing, I just loved it. Bierut’s comedy is set in a night in Hollywood where Hannah is invited by her sister to have dinner with ..read more

Five Favorite Music Videos Tied to Big Movies

Will Smith, Dru Hill et al for “Wild, Wild West” With the advent of music videos going completely out of style with introduction of music streaming, a long time element of music fandom died. While there are still plenty of music videos, they no longer make or break the popularity of a single or music album. One of the best things about being a movie and music fan is that there was almost always a music video attached to the movie itself. Whether it was the movie’s theme song, or a music video directly reflecting the movie content, there was always a guarantee of a music video for a movie. Wh ..read more

Hunting for the Hag (2023)

A small group of friends head out to investigate a witch known as The Hawthorne Hag in an effort to catch her on camera.  Written by Paul A. Brooks and Sierra Renfro and directed by Brooks, the film mixed traditional filmmaking with found footage style to dubious results. The story here is not original in the least bit and it takes pretty much all the expected turns with a few new elements here and there, but nothing to write home about. This is a film that had potential and seems to have wasted it by taking the easy way out in terms of story beats and supposed twists. Let’s be honest her ..read more

In the sequel, the gang is all here, well almost. Pooh, Piglet, Owl, and Tigger are stalking and killing in the 100 Acres Woods.   Written by Rhys Frake-Waterfield and Matt Leslie based on characters created by A.A. Milne and directed by Rhys Frake-Waterfield, this sequel ups the ante and goes all out. Well, having not seen the first film, knowledge of the story from the first is not something that was at hand to watch this film, but it was assured that it was not needed. And that was right. The story here is fairly simple, predictable a bit in spots, it’s one of those films that is very ..read more

I’ve never really delved into the mad world of the Polonia Brothers before and I think it’s about time I gave their work a gander. The twin brothers gained fame and notoriety all the way back in 1996 when Blockbuster bought the distribution rights to their film Feeders and it became one of the video chain’s most rented indie title that year. Now, before I go on, I have to admit that I’ve tried to watch Feeders several times but I could never really get into it. It just felt really slow and meandering. Perhaps I wasn’t in the right mood. I don’t know. I will watch it one day, I promise. For now ..read more

BOOTLEG FILES 861: “Follies” (fan film recreation of the legendary 1971 Broadway musical). LAST SEEN: On YouTube. AMERICAN HOME VIDEO: None. REASON FOR BOOTLEG STATUS: An unauthorized presentation of inconsistent quality. CHANCES OF SEEING A COMMERCIAL DVD RELEASE: Not likely. When the Stephen Sondheim musical “Follies” opened on Broadway in April 1971, the show’s co-director Harold Prince was sowing the seeds of a potential film version featuring some of Hollywood’s greatest stars. John Springer, who handled the publicity for the Broadway show, would later claim that a minor miracle was achie ..read more

Sorceress of Suburbia (2011)

Director Fred Olen Ray has had one of the weirdest movie careers I’ve ever seen from any director. It’s not many filmmakers that can ride the tides of various trends creating softcore porn for basic cable, erotic thriller, cheapy horror movies, and then goofy Hallmark Channel Christmas movies in one career. Fred Olen Ray gets shit done, I guess, and “Sorceress of Suburbia” is one of his many forays in to the porn sub-genre. Sherri and Carrie are sisters, and both are witches. When Carrie conjures Cleopatra so that the ancient queen can teach Sherri bedroom secrets to help her newlywed sister h ..read more
