IS THERE TOO MUCH OF AN EMPHASIS ON PAIN?

With rehabbing an injury, the goal is often to get rid of the pain and get back to 100% as soon as possible. The issue I find with the measure of short-term success based around pain resolution is that it often falls on passive interventions such as rest, manual therapy etc. Yes, these can temporarily settle the pain quickly, however, despite being in much less or no pain, we have not increased your capacity for work and in fact often it is reduced. The absence of pain gives a mental ‘green light’ to crack on and I find leads individuals to ramp up activity to pre-injury levels quickly ..read more

HOW LONG SHOULD YOU REST A RUNNING INJURY?
The Strength for Endurance Network
by Strength For Endurance Ltd
7M ago
The million dollar question, and probably one that most of us have asked at some point during our running lifespan, is “How long should I rest a running injury for?”. First and foremost, we need to understand that injuries are completely individual, and therefore putting an exact time to your recovery and when you’ll be ready to resume running again is rarely possible. If someone is claiming that in ‘X’ weeks you can lace up the trainers again, then take it with a bit of caution - and make sure you’ve got a logical plan in place. Too often, athletes ignore niggles until they get worse ..read more

WHY YOU CAN’T LIFT MORE WEIGHT

When it comes to strength training, reaching a plateau where you can't lift more weight can be frustrating and demotivating. However, like any other training disciplines, it's essential to remember that progress in the gym is not always linear. Why can’t I lift more weight? It’s important to note that if you are following a progressive approach with your strength program, then this question is unlikely to be coming up. An effective and realistic program will have you gradually increasing the demands placed on your muscles to stimulate growth and adaptation (progressive overload). By en ..read more

CAN STRENGTH TRAINING IMPROVE RUNNING?

When it comes to improving running performance, most runners focus on pounding the pavement, traversing the trails, clocking in miles, and fine-tuning their technique. While these factors certainly play a crucial role, there's another (not so secret) ingredient that can take your running to new heights: strength training. Incorporating a well-rounded strength training program into your routine can help you develop a more efficient stride, reduce the risk of injuries, and ultimately unlock your full potential as a runner. The question is: do you currently have the strength to go the di ..read more

Race recap by Dan Dunford Autumn 2022, following a year of 70.3 training and competition, it was time to turn the focus to my first full distance Triathlon, Challenge Roth in June 2023. One of the main reasons for me taking on this event was to experience the training required in getting to race day, giving me a greater insight as a coach. It was always going to be Challenge Roth for me, after first reading the Chrissie Wellington books (inspiring and a great read for anyone, not just triathletes!), plus the visible support for this event from the local community. The first training bl ..read more

Words by: Sophie Tabor Call this blog a practical example of how consistency in ultra-training is NOT perfection. I am giving you an insight into my own preparation and how I was still able to have a strong race despite not everything going to plan in the lead up.   The race: Mozart Ultra which is a 82km race with 4300m + elevation in the mountains around Salzburg, Austria.    Phase 1. Winter Base Moving house and other external loads meant the winter was spent ticking over with a low volume of running, a bit of turbo work and of course, I focused on prioritising S&C ..read more

I am sure many of you have had that heart sink moment in the last few weeks before a race where a new pain crops up or an old injury rears its ugly head. More often than not, these things appear as if out of nowhere and then don’t cause any issues in the race and disappear afterwards as if they were never there.  Why does this happen? The reality is often multifactorial but a key contributing factor is often pre-race stress.  Now, another thing to note is that coming into a Taper, you may have hit peak training volume/intensity which brings with it fatigue, reduced time for n ..read more
