My garden currently has no mulch which is not ideal. I have access to lots of oak leaves and my plan was to slightly shred them up and put a layer of leaves over my whole bed. I already have about a foot of rich top soil with recently added compost. One of my questions is will the leaves tie up nitrogen in the soil? Also I know my oak tree in my yard causes my soil to be quite acidic, Will these leaves cause a decrease in oh in my bed? I could add potash if that’s the case so it’s not the end of the world but what are peoples thoughts on this? I’m trying to follow permaculture methods a bit a ..read more

I’m guessing aphids? There’s so many I think I just need to pull the plants.

What are some vegetables that do good in the ground this early? We have a nice weekend coming up (low-70’s for the high) but we are still having some cold nights (sub-40’s). Wondering what starts I could put in the ground that would survive the cold nights?
I’ve got -bell peppers -onions (Walla Walla, red, green) -snap peas -beans (blue lake and Kentucky pole?) -cucumbers -carrots -celery -zucchini -spinach -broccoli -butter lettuce -romaine lettuce -jalapeños
What would likely survive now? What should I wait on? I’m in zone 8 if that helps!

Saw another post about a fishing line trick to keep crow’s out of the garden. Got me thinking that (perhaps) an offset pattern of fishing line surrounding a garden just might keep them out - or at least deter them. My thinking is they likely can’t see it and would get surprised & scared off when they walk into it. I doubt it would be foolproof but I’d build it in such a way to make it tough for them to navigate their way to into the garden.
Any thoughts - has anyone tried this? It would be cheap, easy and invisible.
