Will Martin Scorsese Get Canceled (Again)?
Hollywood in Toto

Director Martin Scorsese is no stranger to Cancel Culture.  The Oscar winner felt its sting years before the term appeared in pop culture circles. His 1997 movie “Kundun,” detailing the life of the 14th Dalai Lama, angered the Chinese Communist Party. That impacted both its release schedule and secondary life outside of theaters. Disney, seeking favor with China, apologized for the movie’s existence. The mega company also did all it could to wipe the film from memory. Good luck finding the film now. Scorsese’s latest project could face similar headwinds. The directorial legend is teamin ..read more

Bill Maher Uncancels Sage Steele for ‘Club Random’ Network

Sage Steele learned the Gina Carano lesson the hard way. Carano got fired by Disney for not toeing the woke progressive line on social media. Steele, a fixture at Disney-owned ESPN since 2007, also got forced out after accurately describing Barack Obama’s racial makeup and questioning vaccine mandates. Steele has been essentially benched ever since. Now, the sports personality is back, courtesy of Bill Maher. The liberal talk show host debuted his “Club Random” podcast, a place tailor-made for guests across the cultural landscape, in 2022. His chat with Steele last year sparked something more ..read more

Studio Mocks Christians to Promote Sydney Sweeney’s ‘Immaculate’
Hollywood in Toto

Imagine a movie studio promoting a film by amplifying Islamic outrage against it. You can’t. It’s impossible. The same holds for most major religions. Antisemitism is flaring on the far-Left, meaning a movie studio would be loathe to target that community at this point. Christians? It’s fair game. Always. Neon, the distributor of the new Sydney Sweeney horror film “Immaculate,” is weaponing Christians offended by it to promote the indie shocker. Here’s the film’s official description: Sydney Sweeney stars as Cecilia, an American nun of devout faith, embarking on a new journey in a remote con ..read more

Wim Wenders’ “Perfect Days” is the portrait of a life that might seem small and simple, but is full of insight, discipline, and steady rewards. It stars Koji Yakusho, in a performance that won him Best Actor at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival, as Hirayama, a middle-aged man whose daily life is a steady routine of work and well-earned idle time. Hirayama wakes every morning, alone in his small apartment, where he readies himself for another day of working in Tokyo. Hirayama cleans public restrooms, both porta-a-potties and brick-and-mortar bathrooms. He does this cheerfully, visibly works very ..read more

Bill Maher Schools Kara Swisher, Media on Censorship

Bill Maher fuels mixed emotions on the political Right. He’s been a megaphone for progressive causes for most of his decades-long career. His HBO showcase allows him to rally the Left against GOP figures, particularly President Donald Trump. Yet he’s one of the most powerful voices, Left or Right, against the “woke mind virus.” Lately, he’s equally strong against his party’s push to crush free speech. When even a liberal Supreme Court Justice can’t acknowledge why we need the First Amendment, that matters. .@GGreenwald rips apart Ketanji Brown Jackson's concern that the First Amendment could ..read more

‘Land of Saints and Sinners’ Shows Two Sides of Neeson
Hollywood in Toto

Liam Neeson’s post-“Taken” career has been a blessing and a curse for the Oscar nominee. Yes, he works constantly as an in-demand action hero even as he enters his 70s. The films in question are often beneath him, generic tales that barely tap his gifts. There’s less time for films like “Rob Roy,” “Michael Collins” or “Schindler’s List.” “In the Land of Saints and Sinners” offers a bridge between his cinematic worlds. It’s more ambitious than recent Neeson titles like “Retribution” and “Blacklight,” and the story cares as much about Ireland’s “Troubles” as bombs or bullets. Neeson’s character ..read more

Is Liam Neeson Trying to Sink His Own Movie?
Hollywood in Toto
by Christian Toto

Liam Neeson’s career changed forever following his 2008 smash, “Taken.” Suddenly, the towering actor became an action hero after decades of serious screen work. He’s been cranking out genre films ever since, including the upcoming thriller “In the Land of Saints and Sinners.”  The film casts the 71-year-old as a reluctant assassin hoping to turn his life around after decades of killing. Oscar-nominee Kerry Condon (“The Banshees of Inisherin“) co-stars as an IRA terrorist. The project hits theaters March 29, but Neeson fans can sample some of his most recent work now. He contributed ..read more

These Buried Bruce Willis Films Need to Be Unearthed
Hollywood in Toto

There will be no new Bruce Willis movies and that stinks. Willis stepped away from acting in 2022 after an aphasia diagnosis. He would later be diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia, making a return to performing near impossible. He is, however, surrounded by loved ones, according to social media postings by family. That’s a small relief in the random cruelty that ended Willis’s career. The artist just celebrated his 69th birthday, and his being surrounded by so much supportive family far outweighs whether or not his film legacy continues. Bruce Willis receives outpouring of love from family ..read more

Is Billy Ray’s Jan. 6 Project Hollywood’s October Surprise?
Hollywood in Toto

Hollywood knows how to keep a secret. For example, Disney shocked everyone by announcing a second “Moana” film will drop later this year, a project virtually no one knew about until the Mouse House’s decree. And stars and directors alike kept quiet about producer Harvey Weinstein’s predilections until The New York Times’ investigation effectively ended his Hollywood career. Could director Billy Ray’s next anti-Trump project fall into that category? Ray is the celebrated writer/director behind “Shattered Glass,” “Breach” and “The Comey Rule,” the latter serving as fan fiction for Trump-derang ..read more

‘American Society of Magical Negroes’ Hurts Race Relations Post-George Floyd
Hollywood in Toto
by Carl Kozlowski

Race relations in America took on a tense atmosphere in 2020 following the death of George Floyd. Protests sprung up nationwide, sparking the rise of DEI initiatives across society. Just as it seemed like black and white Americans could get back to engaging on a human level, a new movie arrives to set the flames ablaze again in the guise of satire. “The American Society of Magical Negroes” was a much-anticipated comic fantasy at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, but it received a terrible reaction from reviewers. Critics either thought it was too negative about race relations in the U.S. or ..read more
