We believe it is safe to say that Spring is finally here in North America. Relatively safe. Pretty sure it is safe.    Not only will April showers bring May flowers but May also sees the arrival of the new Danish horror flick Nightwatch: Demons Are Forever, and the UK horror flick, Stopmotion. Next month also sees the ongoing live watch parties every other Friday night of The Last Drive-In with Joe Bob Briggs.    Four Toxic Avenger films are coming to the repertory programming next month. We don't know if Bob Clark's Deathdream and Buddy Giovinazzo's Combat Shock  ..read more

ABIGAIL Review: Ballet Gets Bloody Entertaining
ScreenAnarchy

It's a juggling act to get an entertaining horror film - one that's fun, funny, yet still scary, with a good share of violence and gore, a decent story with snappy dialogue, and a monster that an audience can root for, maybe more than the heros. Radio Silence - directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, and producer Chad Villella - have been (mostly) pulling this off, with a particular formula that has worked with slasher and pseudo-slasher films such as Ready or Not and Scream (2022). If it isn't broken, don't fix it, and hence we have Abigail. A solid piece of horror action comedy ..read more

THE GREATEST HITS Interview: Ned Benson, Lucy Boynton, Justin H. Min on Los Angeles and Everchanging Relationships with Music

In my review of The Greatest Hits, the new sci-fi romance from The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby writer/director Ned Benson, I mention that it opens with a montage of two young lovers “generally doing things that young, hip couples do in LA.” So, as someone from Los Angeles, I couldn’t help but pick the brains of Benson and stars Lucy Boynton and Justin H. Min about my hometown when I recently had the chance to sit down with them … in Chicago, where I now live. Because The Greatest Hits is a movie about the power of music to literally transport protagonist Harriet (Boynton) back in time, we ..read more

Chattanooga Film Festival 2024: Massive, Mind-Melting Last Wave

Wow. Wow wow wow. The Chattanooga Film Festival just unleashed a cavalcade of cinematic insanity for their upcoming extravaganza (June 21-23 in person, June 21-28 virtual). We’re big fans of CFF’s annual explosion of genre fun, featuring narrative features, docs, tasty little weirdo shorts blocks, and events. For instance, CFF is hosting a “Physical Media Rodeo” this year, meaning that there will be some pretty rad vendors on hand to whet your need for tangible art, movies, and books (and more goodies, see press release) that you can hold. Anything physical you buy comes home with you, and wi ..read more

WERCKMEISTER HARMONIES Blu-ray Review: The Profound and Desperate Hours
ScreenAnarchy
by

Given the uniqueness and weirdness of the films of Bela Tarr, it's surprising that more of his films are not part of the Criterion collection. Here's hoping that his masterpiece Werckmeister Harmonies is but the first. A stark and deeply humanist portrayal of a small town sinking under the weight of its own desperation, it's a singular vision of a dystopian state that has already arrived, even if it's hidden in small parts of the world, and well worthy of a 4K/Blu-ray release. It's what must be a typical evening at the local bar in this (presumably) average town in Hungary, and the barman is ..read more

THE COFFEE TABLE Review: Wallowing in Its Own Original Mess
ScreenAnarchy
by

New parents Jesus and Maria, still in the nesting phase after moving into a new apartment, need a new coffee table. Engaging with, or rather enduring, one of the oiliest, least competent, salesmen imaginable, it quickly becomes clear that the modest purchase has little do with with acquiring a cheap piece of faux-Swedish furniture (umlats abound), assembled in China, and everything to do with the changes in relationship dynamics that come with the birth of a child.

Maria has taken over the household in nearly every detail, and Jesus clings to the purchase of this gaudy piece of furniture t ..read more
