Seeding lawns is a more economical alternative to sod. There are a few different ways it’s done. Methods of Seeding lawns: Clear, Rake, Hand Spread, Cover, Water (For homeowners with min tools or small areas): Clear the area to just dirt. Lawns cannot be planted on top of a previous lawn. Scarify soil with a thatch rake to loosen top layers of soil Spread seed out by hand like shaking out pepper or salt on a dish.
