I’ve visited the Eastern & Oriental Hotel (E&O) in Penang before but never stayed there. But, last year I got the chance to indulge in a couple of nights at E&O. While there are plenty of lodging options in Penang ranging from cozy homestays to luxury hotels, if you are looking for a taste of luxury while reminiscing the island’s colonial past, the E&O is the place to be. The E&O is the sister hotel to the iconic Raffles Hotel in Singapore. Both hotels were built by the Sarkies brothers who hailed from Armenia. After the opening of the Suez Canal in 1869, travel from Europe ..read more

Ghost of Winters Past: The Sólheimasandur Plane Wreck

On the 21st November 1973, a United States Navy DC3 plane was flying back to Keflavik from Hofn after delivering supplies. During the flight the aircraft experienced severe icing forcing the pilot to make an emergency landing on Sólheimasandur Beach. Fortunately, all crew members survived and were rescued by helicopter. The DC3 was deemed unsalvageable, all sensitive equipment was removed leaving behind only the fuselage (it was the Cold War then and Iceland served as a military base for the United States and NATO). Since then, the wreckage has been lying on the beach, exposed to the elements ..read more

Iceland has often been described as a special place with landscapes that will make you wonder if you are on another planet. On my second visit to this unique country in November this year, I had more opportunities to explore more off worldly locations in Iceland. It’s no wonder that many movies are filmed in Iceland, especially movies with scenes on alien planets or exotic landscapes. So here are 5 places on my recent trip which will make you think that you are on another planet. Hverir Geothermal areas are fascinating and can resemble landscapes from other planets. Iceland, with its volcanic ..read more

Need to find somewhere quiet to spend your weekend? Here’s how you can get away from the hustle and bustle without leaving Singapore or buying an expensive plane ticket. And you still get to enjoy some sand, sun and sea while you are at it. I’m referring to the southern islands that form part of Singapore. I did visit them during the Covid lockdowns when international travel was restricted. You can read about my visit here. Back then it was just a day trip and hopping from island to island. You could always stay or camp at St John’s and Lazarus Islands since my schooldays. Lodgings were rudime ..read more

When you think of the Maldives, most people will think of luxury villas floating on top of the ocean waves with views of the setting Sun. But getting these views can be rather costly and if you are trying to figure out the various options from transfers to food packages available then read on. I had the opportunity to visit the Maldives last February and here is my own experience in booking a resort stay and what to expect when you are there. Since a stay at any of the luxury resorts is going to cost you an arm and a leg, and possibly one of your kidneys, its best to decide how much you want t ..read more

The Mirror Lake

It seems like I get to visit Ipoh quite often because of family living there. And every trip back there I try to find something new to do in this sleepy small town which is often thought of as a place for retirees. Fortunately, there is a new attraction in town and it’s part of the local government’s effort to promote eco-tourism. There is a rather new Geopark which is located in the midst of several limestone mountains. The main attraction is a small lake which has flooded a couple of old quarries. The attraction was only open in the last 2 years so it’s still rather raw and undergoing develo ..read more

Tangalooma Wrecks It’s not often that you will get a chance to see ship wrecks up close. They are usually found in deeper waters and unless you are scuba diving, you won’t get anywhere near them. However, you can swim among some wrecked ships off the coast of eastern Australia near Brisbane. So if you’ve never heard of the Tangalooma Wrecks then read on. The Tangalooma Wrecks are located off Moreton Island which is just off the coast of Queensland. There are many tours and ferries going to Moreton Island from Brisbane and many of them include the Tangalooma Wrecks in their site seeing itiner ..read more

Cape Byron Lighthouse

Cape Byron There are many lighthouses along the coasts of Australia, but none are as well known as the lighthouse at Cape Byron. The lighthouse is situated on the most easterly point of the Australian mainland. Because of this, its a great location for viewing sunrise, and you will be the first person in Australia to see the sunrise when you are here. I had the opportunity to visit Cape Byron Lighthouse in December last year. To get here, you would have to first get to the small town of Byron Bay. The nearest major city is Brisbane which is a 2-3 hours drive away. If you are coming from Sydn ..read more

Khao Soi

Thailand is quite well known for its food scene and for most people the first thing that comes to their mind when it comes to Thai food is tom yum soup or pad thai. There are also other equally good Thai foods like this crab omelette that has won a Michelin star. However, in northern Thailand the specialty isn’t tom yum or pad thai. But its a noodle dish called khao soi. Here, egg noodles are served with a thick spicy curry broth with either chicken, pork or beef. Vegetable garnish includes pickled mustard greens, shallots and lime slices. It is then topped with fried egg noodles to give a dif ..read more

Road to Pai

My previous post was all about Pai, so this one would be all about getting to Pai from Chiangmai. Pai isn’t that far from Chiangmai at around 146 km away. But the trip there takes almost 2.5 to 3 hours as it involves driving through hundreds of twists and turns with sometimes steep gradients of up to 30°. The route from Chiangmai is quite straight forward. Take Highway 107 heading north out of Chiangmai. Then turn west into Route 1095 which will take you to Pai. Route 1095 is part of the route known as the Mae Hong Son Loop. This is a circular route of around 612 km that starts from Chiangmai ..read more
