Would rocks over everything look good? Full removal and start over? The dirt is a good time, previous owners burnt pallets, and did not clean well after. submitted by /u/falcben [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Big box pavers - why are they disliked?

I'm looking to do a DIY patio. Home depot has a very compelling sale going on for 25 cents a paver or $1.125 / sf. Going through reddit it seems like they're highly discouraged but I can't find any specifics on what's wrong with them. Why should I pay the significant premium for Belgard or Nicolock etc. I'd be willing to spend extra money if there was some significant benefit, longevity, aesthetics, uniformity etc but can't find specifics. Also not sure what level of cost difference justifies the upgrade. submitted by /u/sotired3333 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Should I cut this tree?

Hi, I’m thinking of cutting these jacarandas as they haven’t really been looked after and leave a lot of mess. I’d also like to put some garden edges in around the fence line too. I was thinking of cutting down the left tree and cutting the right branch on the right tree (see red circles). The other branch can stay as this one overhangs the yard which I like as it provides shade. What’s everyone’s thoughts? submitted by /u/simplesierra [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

How do I fix these cracks in my concrete (front porch stairs & patio expansion joint)? Need some how-to advice and instructions on how to fill, repair, seal two separate areas where I have cracked, damaged concrete and deep erosion. Here’s the scope of work I’m planning to do for both areas: 1st - Put polymeric sand between cracks, have a 50lb bag that I’d like use between both areas. QUESTIONS: is this the best material to be “filling the space underneath my front steps/walk? Top soil? Masonry sand? Anything else? I’m mainly concerned about causing damage and causing movement if I pu ..read more

Where to place trees in patio

I’m looking for advice on tree placement inside this new patio. Everything in blue is existing. The patio will be new. I want two golden rain trees inside the patio (yes, I know they are invasive in some places. They do not, however, grow naturally from seed in my climate). Will the current placement look good? Should I move them left? I don’t think I want one in front of the patio door because I wouldn’t want it to block my view of the yard. Any advice on the shape of the patio? Should I keep it as a rectangle or add some curves somewhere? Does anyone have some similar patios I can use ..read more

Gardenias turning yellow

We have what we think are mature gardenias that are turning yellow and losing leaves in some spots. They put out white flowers this past winter and looked fine until very recently. Is this a deficiency of some sort? We really don’t want them to die. submitted by /u/Greenoaks42 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more
