Since February 11th, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers have seized four shipments of palm oil in Baltimore due to information indicating that the palm oil was manufactured by forced labor, a form of modern slavery. The palm oil shipments are valued at nearly $2.5 million. Palm oil is the latest commodity to receive scrutiny from CBP. President Joe Biden has signed into law legislation that bans imports from China’s northwestern Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region over concerns of forced labor, the White House announced Thursday. As part of a pilot project, the BMW Group used satellite data and big data analyses to achieve far-reaching supply chain transparency, all the way through to the origins of a raw material.
