One more: “Suck it up, Buttercup” post. A brief lesson on skills, shortcuts, experience, efficiency. (As usual?) Leather skiving. Essentially, thinning leather. Don’t confuse this with leather splitting. Which is sort of the same. “Splitting” is thinning an entire leather piece (or hide) to one continuous and hopefully consistent thickness. Example, going from 10 oz to 6 oz. “Skiving” thins, as well. But usually it’s only a section of the leather piece. Usually a gradual slope sliced off. Story time: When I was younger (12 - 17 years old) my father and I were building our house. Yes, it took 5 years from start to finish. He literally did every step. He’d work on it every day after his midnight shift at work at the brewery, and I’d go every Saturday, Sunday, school holiday and every day during the summers. My entire high school life was building a house with my dad. We’d always stop at Pop’s footlong hotdog for breakfast on the way out. So the 1974, “Ole Blue” Ford F-250 pickup truck (with 36” tires) sat in the parking lot loaded with brick laying paraphernalia, wheelbarrows an ..read more

If you came for story, enjoy.  ——— Ink Composition and inspiration: Books, coffee, mermaid, Lilly flower, scallop shells  ——— Ink meaning: Books - for my mother (deeper inference withheld here for obvious reasons) Coffee - see meaning for ..read more

I’m often asked if I could give a “virtual tour” of the Mascon Leather. Today, on a bit of a whim, I walked around and snapped some shots. Pardon the mess. The first section of photos are of the leather studio itself. The second section are of the photo studio.     We had a few special guests over to the house / studio yesterday. A few months ago I was asked to have “Mascon Leather” featured in an upcoming issue of “Distinction” magazine. Of course that means an interview and photo shoot. The magazine’s Creative Director, E.J. Troudt, arrived in the morning and brought with him the Adam Ewing Photography team (Adam Ewing and Jeff Master). The crew systematically and efficiently took over the leather studio, leather loft and photo room, setting up camera gear, lights, laptops, tripods, backdrops and more. Adam is the most brilliant photogra ..read more
