It is with a heavy heart ATR has decided to no longer participate in Deaf.Read.   This will be the last post we enter.  ATR remains grateful, that in spite of considerable opposition from certain areas of the deaf in the UK, the USA still allowed ATR to survive and indeed thrive via ensuring input, debate and indeed, inclusion, was a reality, and a right for all. While the UK deaf were determined to stifle democracy and establish themsleves as sign language extremists, banning and blanking everyone who didn't fit an image they alone created. Initially, that meant their ..read more

Creating a new ear

The father of a 10-year-old girl set to get a new lab-built ear has said the science will transform her life. Radiyah, from Milford Haven, Pembrokeshire, has a condition known as microtia and was born without a properly formed left ear. Now she is set to get a new ear after scientists at Swansea University began using 3D printing to build human cartilage. Her father, Rana, said it would "help boost her confidence". "Girls like to tie their hair up and pierce their ears and to have two matching ears will be a positive thing," he said. The £2.5m study at Swansea University will use huma ..read more

AN INSPIRATIONAL Newport star student who studied psychology part-time at University of South Wales alongside her freelance work as a British Sign Language Interpreter has achieved top marks. Nez Parr decided to utilise her expertise in British Sign Language (BSL) in her dissertation research, applying eye-tracker software to investigate if sign language is directed more at the face, mouth, or hands.  She said: "This was a challenging project to undertake during a pandemic. I had to think creatively about how to recruit participants, in designing an online version of an eye track ..read more

[The first bit]. Foreword. Call me Ishmael (that's been done hasn't it ?)... I'm 3rd generation as a profoundly deaf person, having a mother and grandmother suffer this disability, and other family members also have some hearing problems, or maybe they just stopped listening? Who knows?  This book you will be reading blows the lid off and exposes many myths about hearing loss, and settles once and for all that old contentious issue of, 'Who ARE these deaf people?' and, WHY? (I left out the When because I couldn't think of any stories about that). I discovered quite by accident tha ..read more

In-vision would have sorted it out day one, or if they informed deaf a fully accessible run down was available daily on the News channel anyway.  ATR tried, with no less than 4 profile blogs being put up, identifying 29 online BSL access areas dedicated to Covid, but the deaf were not interested unless it was live as well.   Boris DID actually go live on-screen with a BSL terp day one (March 2020), but for reasons we don't really know then decided he didn't want another person at No 10 signing away as well, some suggested it was health and safety, but UK regions exposed that ..read more

Not to be confused with welfare funding 'Access to Work' access, or 'Covid' passports.   It is a trade Union [TUC] suggestion, how it can legally empower isn't really explained.  The civil service already has one? SECTION 1  What is a reasonable adjustments passport? This is a live record of adjustments agreed between a worker and their manager to support them at work because of a health condition, impairment, or disability. The passport supports members and their reps to work with employers to ensure that up-to-date, appropriate, practical and correct reasonable adjustme ..read more

How British deaf are being annoyed with American-based subtitling software, and very poor spelling and huge gaps in access via subtitling.. #1  Bad captions annoy me so much. It takes more effort to try and decipher what they're supposed to say and by the time you've figured it out, you've lost track of what's going on ? #2  Content providers need to realise captions aren't a bolt-on afterthought, but a core service and part of their 'offer' to customers. So if Netflix had high-quality captions and Prime didn't, I'd cancel my Prime sub and go all in with Netflix. If you go to ..read more

Sign here please, only another 99,999 and they might in Westminster even read it.  Nobody has learned the reality petitions are pointless.  What's it all about? What do change petitions actually do? The stated mission is to "empower people everywhere to create the change they want to see." Popular topics are economic and criminal justice, human rights, education, environmental protection, animals rights, health, and sustainable food. Us Brits didn't waste our signatures on such inconsequential trivia.... our top 10 issues were... 1.  "Make the Eurovision Song Contest a national ..read more

BIG DEAF from Chella Man on Vimeo. We are all in danger of becoming what we oppose most, the deaf/silent and only signing stereotype, and one size fits all format claims.  Given culture equals kudos, cash, jobs for boys/gals,  and boosts the ego, it matters not inclusion hasn't happened and is unlikely to happen, martyrdom is the new black for the deaf.   Blaming our poor hearing population isn't working so why bother with this gig? The minority has become the majority neat, right? The deaf have become Deaf, and the HoH vanished from the face of the earth overnight, (Some ..read more

Deaf Paedo let off because he was deaf?

The emphasis on the deaf paedo being isolated and then NOT taken to task for his abuse.  Since when was being deaf an 'excuse' for paedophilia?  He's not a victim, the person he hoped to abuse was.  The court is not punishing the principal or the threat this deaf man posed to children. The intent to abuse was clearly identified. Brit justice, NOT working! A deaf paedophile has avoided prison after a judge heard how he’d been the victim of mob justice. An online paedophile hunter video showing the sting that caught Ryan Williams, 31, has been viewed 45,000 times culmina ..read more
