It’s funny when one of the world’s best-known travel mags, Conde Nast Traveler, confirms what Australians have known all along. It’s not news to us: Australia’s beaches are undoubtedly the best, and we and everyone else love them.
Most Australians never live far from the coast. We know and love the beach. Traditionally, when we’re somewhere else in the world, we ‘coast huggers’ feel disoriented; suddenly, the beach is not a few kilometres away. We yearn for the rhythm of the surf, the cool sand between our toes at su ..read more

Recently, three big events helped show us why McLaren Vale, perhaps one of our lesser-known wine districts, is one of our most vibrant.
First, at the 7th Annual James Halliday Grenache Challenge, where the best of this delightful grape’s offerings go on show, local heroes Serafino of McLaren Vale took the prize with their 2022 Reserve Grenache.

AC Hotel’s tagline ‘Everything you need, and nothing you don’t’, doesn’t come close to telling the whole story. At the AC by Marriott Southbank, Melbourne everything is at your fingertips; and a whole lot more.
History
The AC refers to hotelier Antonio Catalán. In 1997, in Spain, his vision was for timeless hotels with a ‘European ‘feel’ while incorporating their locale in every element from design to dining. He believes, “Hotels should serve as an escape, an oasis from the mundane.”
Despite over 200 hotels in 27 c ..read more

This Magnificent Life spoke with painter Jill Bryant.
“I was born in West Australia, and I have lived in Brisbane for the last 4 years. I have produced and sold both abstract and impressionistic paintings throughout Australia. Living temporarily on the East Coast, I have focused on Australian watercolour painting in the last few years. Initially out of convenience because of storage issues but as a result, I have truly fallen in love with this medium.
What are your influences? Artists, nature, the immediate world ar ..read more

A package arrived the other day. Six bottles from Longview Estate in the Adelaide Hills.
Three whites and three reds. A couple of familiars but first timers too. Plenty of scope for exploration and enjoyment.
The new ones had us intrigued so of course we had to go to the source and find out more; to see what one of our favourite family wineries was up to.
We contacted Peter Saturno who with brother Mark and overseeing winemaker Ben Glaetzer is driving the Longview name forward. Before we talked about the wines we ta ..read more

Truffle aroma is musky, oaky, almost gamey – perhaps best described as the fragrance of extravagance. The deeply complex flavour combines with the alluring scent in a wave of gentle umami that is irresistible to most. And somehow truffles taste even better when shaved, slivered and sliced in elegant surrounds. Fittingly, then Emporium Hotel’s Signature restaurant is serving up everything truffle every Sunday until August 27.
Signature’s Executive Chef Luca Spagnola has collaborated with Lady Truffle – Debs Oliver to ..read more

In 1844 one of Melbourne’s first public houses, the Apollo Inn, opened on the corner of Flinders Lane & Russell St. In 2023, that site is home to what is considered Melbourne’s (or is that Australia’s?) finest restaurant – Gimlet.

Nearby, the new Apollo Inn is the latest from Chef Andrew McConnell and partner Jo McGann’s taste-making restaurant group Trader House. The Apollo Inn is self-described as “our ode to the ageless art of the cocktail, the bar, the bartender and the drinker”.
