Hilarious new bank-notes reveal the hidden pop culture of currency

Manipulation of currency in any form is illegal. Even a simple doodle could technically land you in hot water. So any art form that defaces currency is definitely a rebellious one. Perhaps a way of sticking it to the man! This fact makes James Charles’ dollar bill art, all the richer. The symbolism of money paired with pop-culture can really get you thinking about cash in a different way than you are used to. You might say that Charles’ currency has more to do with thought than economics. It is too bad that our everyday currency can’t be this original! Source ..read more

Mike Lee has a series of illustrations portraying a toy-ish figure in all sorts of situations. Mike Lee draws figures and scenes in miniature with a black and white color scheme. He creates figures that showcase emotions and situations familiar and yet extremely simplified. To do this, he uses graphite, paper, pen, ink, and a variety of other mediums to draw with and on. Mike draws miniature scenes and figures and through, “isolating them from their toy-like environments and [focuses]…on finding expression through minimalism”. Many artists focus on one form of art; some excel at more than a few. Here, we’ll see four (of the many, many) musicians who also turn out to be amazing visual artists. From top to bottom: Marilyn Manson shows off his grand watercolor abilities on Instagram; John Gourley, Portugal. The Man’s lead vocals, creates eccentric and unusual graphic art, which often gets on the covers of their albums; Kim Gordon creates social and political protests through art – she also makes simply stunning portraits, too; and Matt Skiba actually displays his work in galleries, which often embody dark and punk ..read more

Porcelain has cemented itself as one of the most commonly used materials in sculpture. These hybrid works by Juliette Clovis speak to its versatility as both a material and canvas. The French artist is out with a series of sculptures that walk the fine line between nature and myth. Given female forms, the busts have been carefully sculpted out of porcelain and laden with abnormal features like spikes, flowers, and tiny bird ornaments. The works manage to provoke unnerving, anxious feelings out of its viewers but also achieve gentle tones in between. Check out some of t ..read more

In praise of the strange and awkward– illustrations for the underdog

London illustrator Benjamin Phillips has a unique style that is simplistic and quirky. Often using imagery of animals or people, the pieces give a window into Phillips’ worldview and even hint at a plot narrative within the drawings. In addition to his endearingly awkward illustrations, Phillips has produced three-dimensional works in a style similar to the drawings. Some sculptures play with the interaction between the object and its shadow, while other sculptures manage to capture the lovely awkwardness of a line drawing on a larger scale. Phillips studied illustration at the Unive ..read more
