The Arizona governor, Katie Hobbs, a Democrat, called for an Arizona supreme court ruling to be repealed that permits enforcement of an 1864 law banning almost all abortions. Speaking at a press conference the governor said: 'The near total civil war-era ban that continues to hang over our heads only serves to create more chaos for women and doctors in our state.' First passed when Arizona was still a territory, the ban only permits abortions to save a patient’s life and does not make exceptions for rape or incest Arizona supreme court upholds 1864 law banning almost all abortions ..read more

Got a beauty dilemma? Our expert is here to offer advice. This week, Zoe needs help with thinning hair Hair loss is such a sensitive subject. If it’s a problem that started for no apparent reason, your GP should be your first port of call, and you may be referred to a dermatologist for tests. You can also see a hair loss specialist (a trichologist) privately, too. The first step is pinpointing any obvious causes, often through blood tests. “There are many possible causes of hair loss,” says Anabel Kingsley, trichologist at Philip Kingsley. “These include anything from hormonal changes and gene ..read more

The Guardian | Women

The Colombian pop star – and mother of two boys – disliked the global blockbuster, saying its message robs men of chance to ‘protect and provide’ In an unlikely dissension from what has become a critical and commercial consensus, Colombian musician Shakira has said that the Barbie movie is “emasculating” and suggested that it “rob[s] men of their possibility to be men”. In an interview with Allure magazine that focused on the “she-wolf feminism” behind her work, Shakira said she had watched the Greta Gerwig-directed satire and said: “My sons absolutely hated it. They felt that it was emasculat ..read more

Got a niggling beauty question? Our expert is on hand. This week, Alice is concerned that her sweet tooth will cause skincare problems One of the joys of being a beauty journalist is the unsolicited advice. A skin expert once glanced at my face and said, “You eat loads of sugar, don’t you?” To be fair, I was fuelled entirely on caffeine and cookies at the time, but the fact that it was obvious from looking at my skin was not welcome news. It’s called glycation, and occurs when sugar molecules attach to fats and proteins, causing a loss of elasticity in the skin, lines and dark spots. Suga ..read more

Readers respond to Charlie Brinkhurst-Cuff’s article about her reservations about embarking on parenthood Re Charlie Brinkhurst-Cuff’s article (I know I want at least one baby. But the more I learn about motherhood, the more terrifying it seems, 12 March), having survived the trauma of childbirth and managed to scrape enough to pay for childcare and a living, there is another aspect to consider: the immense negative impact motherhood would have on your career. Having successfully worked in the world of media agencies for 15 years, I have now arrived at a firm stop in my career due to being pen ..read more

Readers reflect on the close friends who have supported and cared for them through thick and thin We were heartened to read of Rhaina Cohen’s new book on close platonic friendships, The Other Significant Others (‘She’s my sacred other’: is friendship, not romance, the key to a happy and fulfilled life?, 13 March), as it deals with many of the issues that we raised in our article published in the Guardian (First person, 22 November 2008), which explored our own strong and committed friendship. We have continued to share our home and lives, and have become even closer friends as we grow older (w ..read more

Is Poor Things a feminist film? Is Barbie? These have become meaningless questions | Beatrice Loayza
The Guardian | Women
by Beatrice Loayza

The label of ‘feminist’ is beginning to feel more like a subcategory on Netflix than a meaningful description of art Let’s play a game. Of all the best picture nominees from this year’s Oscars, which film is the most feminist? Is it Barbie, a family-friendly paean to our childhood’s plastic It Girl? Poor Things, a racy riff on Frankenstein that charts one woman’s process of self-emancipation? Or is it Anatomy of a Fall, about a hotshot bisexual writer accused of murdering her man? You can make a solid case for any one of them. Conversely, a takedown of each is easy, too. Barbie’s girl power is ..read more
