ACMF Statement on Chicken Supply
ACMF Blog

The ACMF is aware of media reports and social media commentary regarding the availability of chicken in some areas. The ACMF notes that localised supply disruptions or pockets of high consumer demand may occur from time to time and are managed accordingly by commercial participants. It appears that some stores may be experiencing a rush on chicken at a time when cost of living price increases are driving consumer decisions based on affordability while ensuring families have access to high quality protein. Despite currently managing to sustain supply, the Australian chicken meat industry (like ..read more

The Australian Chicken Meat Federation (ACMF) is calling for one of the most long-standing and widely-held myths about chicken to be busted once and for all. The fact is that hormones and steroids are NOT fed to chickens! New research[i] has revealed that nearly 6 in 10 Australians have the wrong end of the chicken drumstick, incorrectly believing the myth that chickens raised to produce meat in Australia are given hormones or steroids. Only 13 per cent of survey respondents were correct in their understanding that meat chickens in Australia are NOT given hormones or steroids. The research al ..read more

ACMF Comment on Chicken Production Costs
ACMF Blog

Current chicken prices are not monitored by the ACMF and not something we are able to comment on. Wholesale prices are negotiated between individual chicken suppliers and their customers. But ultimately, it is the retailer who sets the prices to consumers. Based on historical published retail price information, the real price of chicken meat to the consumer has effectively stayed much the same for the past 50 years. However, as is the case with other food items, if the cost of producing chicken increases, some of these costs will ultimately need to be passed on. Input costs into chicken meat ..read more

These discussions centre on value judgments and ethical considerations, not black and white economic or sci ..read more

The Australian Chicken Meat Federation (ACMF) is happy to report that chicken is back on shelves! Supply is back up to nearly 90 per cent of pre-Omicron levels. Primarily whole chickens were available throughout January, but now a much larger range of chicken products are becoming available, with COVID-related staff absenteeism having dropped back down to 10 – 20 per cent, after a peak of up to 50 per cent in January. While staffing and supply are stable for now, the ACMF is closely monitoring the situation given its unpredictable nature. There are still issues supplying a small number of pro ..read more

Like most Australian businesses at present, the Australian chicken meat industry is facing significant pressure from critical staff shortages due to COVID, including COVID related absenteeism. The chicken supply situation continues to deteriorate daily, with businesses in the supply chain experiencing increasing staff shortages and the number of birds unable to be processed growing. Most major processors are operating with a reduction of up to 50 per cent of their required staff. This is significantly impacting our ability to produce chicken, and particularly to process chickens, and will con ..read more

By Guest Blogger Dr Stephen Wiedemann, Managing Director and Principal Scientist at Integrity Ag and Environment Pty Ltd Veggie burgers aren’t new, but it’s only relatively recently that marketing of plant-based alternatives (PBAs) has shifted from targeting vegetarian consumers to targeting environmentally conscious meat eaters. Manufacturers of PBAs have not been shy in touting their products as disrupters and market leaders in terms of environmental impacts. The manufacturers of Quorn claim that it has a “70% lower carbon footprint than chicken”,[i] Sunfed chicken-free chicken is marketed a ..read more

By Guest Blogger Annabel Selby-Jones, ACMF Communications Manager The Australian meat chicken farming industry is one that has been tainted by some long-standing myths and misperceptions, so when the chance came to see things for myself, I jumped at it. Being new to the industry, I had my own perceptions, and I was keen to see if my perceptions matched reality. Here are five things I learned on my tour of one of Australia’s largest poultry operations. Chickens are cheeky! Yes, meat chickens are reared in large industrial barns (for their own health and safety), but they certainly aren’t compl ..read more

Does A Lack of Knowledge Underpin Myths Around Antibiotic Use in the Chicken Industry?
ACMF Blog
by Vivien Kite

The health and welfare of chickens is paramount to Australian meat chicken farmers and producers, which means sometimes antibiotics are required to manage bacterial infections in chickens that were not able to be prevented or controlled by other means. Consciously allowing chickens to suffer or even die from treatable bacterial infections is not something we could ever agree with! It seems that the majority of Australians align with this sentiment. In a recent survey[i], 81 per cent agreed that it was extremely (31 per cent), very (30 per cent) or somewhat important to them that the company m ..read more
