Today we enter the second week in a post-Roe nation.  . It means that states–including Texas–have the green light to eliminate abortion care. . It means that communities who are already grappling with inadequate access to healthcare are even further endangered. . It means that Black, Indigenous, Latine, and other communities of color once again bear the brunt of the Texas government’s assault on human rights. . HRI STATEMENT ON TERMINATION OF REMAIN IN MEXICO POLICY
Human Rights Initiative of North Texas
by Maryam Baig
1y ago
The Supreme Court of the United States held that the Biden Administration has the power to end the Remain in Mexico program, formally known as MPP. Under the policy, people seeking asylum were denied entry into the United States and were forced to wait in Mexico, often in dangerous areas while waiting for their case to be heard. In tandem with Title 42, MPP shut down our border for Black and Brown migrants seeking asylum. Today’s decision is one step towards restoring normalcy and dignity at our border. “We welcome the United States Supreme Court ruling which allows the Biden Administration ..read more

HRI Mourns San Antonio Tragedy
Human Rights Initiative of North Texas
by Maryam Baig
1y ago
At the heels of World Refugee Day, HRI grieves the loss of over 50 lives that were abandoned in a truck in San Antonio, TX. Border militarization and anti-asylum policies like Title 42 and MPP have led people to take increasingly dangerous measures to reach safety—measures that too often cost them their lives. We mourn this horrific tragedy, and for the loved ones left behind, and we firmly call on Congress and the administration to restore pathways to safety before more lives are lost. As world rightly unites to support Ukrainian refugees, it also reminds us of the justice that has been long ..read more

(click here to hear from HRI’s Executive Director, Bill Holston!) Every year about this time, we send out a financial appeal to friends like you. There’s a good reason for the timing. Our country has always claimed to be a place of refuge for others, even though it has not always lived up to that. The promise of living an authentic life free from persecution, abuse, or neglect, is something our clients all strive for and something that we fight alongside them to achieve ..read more
