Following on from 2 days spent in Hakodate, after stopping off for a wander around Sapporo, we spent the night at JR Inn Asahikawa Station which was conveniently located at the JR station with an AEON mall attached that is open until 9pm daily.  Asahikawa is a great base to explore the surrounding regions of Furano and Biei from, with the main highlight in July being the lovely fields of lavender and flowers in the region. View of the station from the hotel guest lounge area JR Inn Asahikawa guest lounge The hotel is simple and clean, with a guest lounge area with a number of books ..read more

When searching for the best okonomiyaki (お好み焼き) places in Osaka, Okonomiyaki Kiji (お好み焼きじ) was one place that seemed to be very highly rated. There are actually two branches that are fairly close together - the main restaurant that is in Shin-Umeda Shokudogai (新梅田食道街), located between Umeda and Osaka Stations, and another one in the Umeda Sky Building. The following photos are from the Umeda Sky Building branch, but I've visited both branches are they are equally as good, so it just depends which one is closer or more convenient to you. Take note: there will more than likely be a line, we had t ..read more

If you want to indulge in delicious greek pastries and sweets, look no further than The Good Filo in Ramsgate. Walk into the shop and the first thing you see is the amazing range of Greek baked goodies. There's a huge selection which makes picking something pretty hard! The café is bustling on a Saturday and we nabbed one of the last tables. Ordering is done up at the counter when you're ready. Coffee frappe  I order the coffee frappe which is icy and refreshing. We started off with some savouries, which to be honest were ordered just to have something to line our stomachs before trying out th ..read more

Hokkaido is such a picturesque part of Japan and although it is world famous for it's winter activities and snow festival, the weather in summer was absolutely perfect - warm but not too humid weather in the mid 20's (celcius). Sapporo is the capital of Hokkaido and also Japan's fifth largest city.  It's an easy city to walk around and see the various sites around the city. Former Hokkaido Government office This American neo-baroque style building, also known as the red brick office, was constructed in 1888 and used for around 80 years until the new government office was built.  The Sapporo cl ..read more

Day 2 Following on from Part 1 of my Hakodate trip, we got up nice and early for a walk around the neighbourhood. I highly recommend getting up early and going for a morning stroll - it's the best time of the day to explore the streets, and it's so quiet and peaceful with just a handful of local morning exercisers. Hakodate is such a picturesque town with many western influences due to being one of the first ports in Japan to open to foreign trade over 150 year ago. Day 1Hakodate Asaichi (Morning market) After catching the shinkansen from Tokyo in the morning and transferring from Shin-Hakodate station to Hakodate station, our first stop was the Hakodate morning market with a delicious seafood breakfast in mind. I definitely recommend going here with an empty stomach, as the market has approximately 250 stores with a tempting array of fresh Hakodate seafood and produce. 1 day tram pass Hakodate is serviced by trams that service most of the tourist sites. As a single tram trip costs 210-250 yen, I highly recommend getting the day pass for 600 yen if you ar ..read more

I recently had the opportunity of visiting Hokkaido, to experience for the first time - Japan in summer. On this trip with my mum, we flew from Sydney to Tokyo on a red eye flight and spent one night in Tokyo, I specifically chose a hotel near Tokyo Station to make it easier to catch a early Shinkansen to Hakodate the next morning. We stayed at Mitsui Garden Kyobashi which was a short walk to the station using Exit 24 in the Yaesu underground mall (it was simple once we figured the giant maze that is Tokyo Station).  For this trip, I bought the 7 day JR pass which was $342 AUD from JTB Travel ..read more

The Bathers' Pavillion - Balmoral Beach, Sydney

The Bathers' Pavillion has a gorgeous view of the always calm Balmoral beach. It has unbeatable views of the beach and ocean. The historical building, which houses the restaurant and the more casual café next door, was built in 1929 as bathing facilities for the numerous summer visitors back in the day (thought to reach to thirty thousand on a busy day).  I took my mum here for lunch on a nice summer day, which I think is the best time of the year to enjoy this venue. Dimmi were doing a 50% deal on food which made it a bargain. I'm here with my mum to have a leisurely weekend lunch in the res ..read more

Public Service Announcement: Get into Mr Liquor Dirty Italian Disco while you can as it's slated to close up shop later this month. I loved my recent visit there; the pop-up restaurant is casual, fun and has a fantastic vibe complete with disco ball and a wood-fire oven named 'Disco Inferno'.  The restaurant itself is housed in a space that was once a drive through Bottle-O in the Tennyson Hotel. There's a number of cocktails on the menu or you can peruse the wide range of beer and wine on offer in the 'bottle shop'. The food is by the Pinbone team so you know you're in for a fantastic meal. Weekend brunch is on another level at Allegra Dining which bypasses the traditional breakfast dishes in favour of more hearty and inventive dishes. There's a focus on fresh ingredients in the modern Australian/Italian menu, with fresh pasta made in-house. It's a lovely space in the buzzing Danks Street dining precinct, and perfect for a group get together for V's birthday. Rosa Gets Drunk The Rosa Gets Drunk cocktail is the Rosa, a lychee, strawberry and watermelon frappé on the standard drinks menu, served with your alcohol of choice. I choose rum as my poison of choice and it's absolutely de ..read more
