When I am asked when it’s best to photograph a newborn I tend to answer between 5-18 days old, as they are still sleeping much of the time and like to curl up, making posing and taking their photographs much easier. I have to say that when I get an “older” newborn, as I did with this guy at 35 days, it is a whole different and amazing experience. They are starting to interact and make eye contact, which makes the photographs feel different. I know, I know, how many times can I use “newborn love”, but it really never gets old and doesn’t matter the newborn. Every newborn I meet I fall in love with – those tiny hands and feet, the lips, the eyes, the smell – all amazing! I find myself holding a newborn and catching a glimpse of one of my boys as a newborn (and man that feels like a lifetime ago), so no it will never get old falling in love with a newborn. Sometimes getting to photograph an older newborn has definite advantages – look at how much he interacted with me. He was making eye contacting and reacting with smiles to me – I fell in love immediately! No better feeling than being totally absorbed in my work (meaning snuggling, soothing and photographing a newborn) and hearing the background parents gushing about their new love. I just smile when the parents can barely step away for a moment from their sweet newborn. I’ve come to realize that they trust me with their baby, but really can’t stand being too far away from them for any amount of time. It never ceases to amaze me how quickly love blooms.
