Hold The Water For Now!

In this heat parents often wonder if their newborn is thirsty, and some will offer water, or add extra water when mixing formula, DON'T!! As adults we are constantly reminded that drinking water is good for us to stay hydrated, but for a newborn, it's a completely different story. A baby will receive all the fluids they need from breastmilk or formula, and there is no need for any additional water. Offering a newborn water could not only interfere with their daily nutritional needs, as they may become too full to drink milk, but it is actually potentially dangerous too. Simply, a newborn's ki ..read more

So What Is A Dream Feed Anyway?
Baby Nurse To Go - Baby Nurse and Newborn Care Atlanta and Beyond

I get asked this question all the time! A dream feed means different things to different people. But generally speaking, it is a term used for a late night feed of a few ozs, usually between 10 pm and midnight. Baby is offered a bottle when he is still essentially asleep, and will take a feed, without becoming fully awake. Baby is fed in the dark, without being unswaddled, no diaper change, right before parents go to bed. It is a means to top up baby's tummy in the hope that they will sleep longer. It does work in some cases, but can back fire on you. I have met some babies who have come to e ..read more

Seasonal Sanity!

As the busy holiday season is upon us, it is very easy for a baby's schedule to be thrown off. What with all the sparkly festivities, lights, smells, voices, and well meaning friends and family members offering to hold baby, a baby can quickly become fussy, over stimulated, over tired, and over everything! Try and keep baby on his normal schedule as much as possible, and explain to friends and family baby does much better if kept on a schedule. However If you find you have a very fussy baby on your hands, and nothing anyone is doing is helping, try removing him from all the goings on. Put him ..read more

October Is SIDS Awareness Month

Do you know what safe sleep looks like? An empty crib is a safe crib!! Never put baby to sleep on a soft surface. Use a crib with a firm mattress that fits snugly, and only use a fitted sheet. Never have any loose blankets, toys or bumpers in the crib, and never use any wedges or positioners. Always put baby on back for sleeping. It is generally agreed upon, that once a baby is able to roll over, there is no need to move him back on to his back, if he prefers sleeping on his tummy, but still place him on his back, when you put him in the crib. The recommended temperature for baby’s room is 68 ..read more

Overly Fussy Baby?
Baby Nurse To Go - Baby Nurse and Newborn Care Atlanta and Beyond

It's not easy to tell at first, but so many babies who are labeled fussy babies, may in fact be struggling with sensory issues. Preemies are particularly susceptible, especially those who have had a lot of invasive intervention. Some of the signs are over reactions to lights, loud noises, temp changes, being handled, and even difficulty feeding. You can help sensitive babies by limiting how many people handle them, keeping the nursery low key, with no overhead lights, and not much noise, keeping visual stimuli to a minimum, and keeping baby safely, but tightly swaddled. In severe cases, I hav ..read more

The Real Deal?

It is common for families to hire a Newborn Care Specialist, assuming they would do some kind of sleep training, only to find that after investing time and a lot of money, their babies are no closer to sleeping well at night. Never assume a Newborn Care Specialist is a Sleep Trainer as well, always ask questions, and double check references for proven results. Not all Newborn Care Specialists are versed in the art of sleep training, and then there are Nannies who decide to work at night, known as Night Nannies. There is a HUGE difference. There is nothing wrong with a Night Nanny, if you don ..read more

Sleep Begets Sleep!

A lot of the emails I get are from moms of poor night time sleepers. When we start talking, and going over baby's schedule, it usually transpires that these babies are not having good enough naps in the day. As counter intuitive as it sounds, a baby that doesn't sleep much in the day, will not sleep well at night. Some moms are even keeping babies up in the hopes they will sleep better at night. ...THEY WON'T!!!! I cannot emphasize enough that a sleep deprived baby will become overtired and cranky, and will pass out from exhaustion, but not go into a normal relaxed, winding down phase, that l ..read more
