Concerned about the excessive administrative burden that the EU Deforestation regulation would place on EU’s agricultural and forestry operations, at the recent AGRIFISH Council meeting from 26 March, Austria called for a “targeted and immediate revision” of the EU Deforestation Regulation.
“The overall objective of combating deforestation in third countries must not be to the detriment of the European economy, and in particular of agriculture and the European forestry sector“1, indicates Austria in a document dated March 21.

This year, the International Day of Forests brings to light the innovation in the Forest-based sector with the theme “Forests and Innovation: New Solutions for a Better World”.
On this occasion, EUSTAFOR, together with FTP recall the evolution of the sector and the importance of taking adequate measures to support it and to keep the forests and the whole value chain resilient. This will allow to continue providing a broad range of wood- and fibre-based products that we use on a daily basis.

As the implementation phase of the EU Deforestation Regulation is coming closer, an increased number of stakeholders are raising their concerns regarding the feasibility of the implementation, and the anticipated information system.
EUSTAFOR members had the opportunity to express their concerns at last week’s internal event that was organised back to back with our General Assembly. On that occasion, EUSTAFOR published a press release calling for a pause in the implementation of the regulation until appropriate conditions are created.

On 07 March 2024, the European State Forest Association (EUSTAFOR) organized an event, “Practical implementation of the EU Deforestation Regulation in state forests”. The event was very timely as the Commission and Member States’ authorities are working on securing all relevant pre-conditions for the implementation of the Regulation which will be applicable of 30 December 2024.

The recent Expert Level Meeting (ELM) was organized by Liaison Unit Bonn (LUBo) on 9-10 January 2024 in Bonn, Germany. The aim of the meeting was to go forward with preparations for the 9th FOREST EUROPE Ministerial Conference, which will be held on 1-2 October 2024 in Bonn.

The Council and Parliament have reached an agreement to establish the first EU carbon removals certification framework. The framework is intended to facilitate and speed up the deployment of high-quality carbon removal and soil emission reduction activities in the EU and composes permanent carbon removals, carbon farming and carbon storage in products.

EUSTAFOR is still active as subcontractor in the SUPERB project, Europe’s largest cross-border Horizon 2020 project with a budget of around € 20 million. The goal of this 4-year project is to create an enabling environment for, and demonstration of, large-scale restoration of forests and forest landscapes across Europe.

Last week, co-organizers CEPF, COPA-Cogeca, ELO, USSE and EUSTAFOR organized a stakeholders meeting with the European Commission, to give members of the respective organizations the opportunity to ask questions regarding the Forest Monitoring proposal. 7 representatives of the Commission visited the European forestry House to attend this hybrid meeting, among which Ion Codescu (Head of Unit, DG ENV), Marco Onida (Senior Expert, DG ENV) and Chiara Micelli (policy officer, DG CLIMA). This edition of the ExCom meeting was hosted by our Austrian member ÖbF in Vienna.
The first day of this two-day gathering took place in the Schönbrunn Hotel, where the members listened to a presentation by Dr. Anna Kreissler on the impact of the forest- and wood industry on the European economy. Her extensive economic modelling resulted in some very interesting data, which certainly will play a roll in future advocacy campaigns.
