I am genuinely confused about the ways people who are hard at hearing or deaf could communicate in dark where there is no light source to see the sign language for eg. in forests or during night time with no moonlight etc. Your answers will help me to learn. Hello, I am 26F with a rare disorder called septo optic dysplasia. It mainly cause vision loss (some people with my condition are legally blind) , neurological problems and endocrine issues. Surprisingly it also causes hearing loss as well. I have mild sensorineural bilateral hearing loss and I don’t know what is my vision acuity is since my vision is getting worse. It was 20/40 left and 20/60 right but not any more. Anyways i would like to ask what is deaf blindness? Do you have to be completely deaf and blind to be deaf blindness? submitted by /u/MidnightNext [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Hello all! I'm making a post on here because doing some research (for personal reasons, my partner is hoh) on language acquisition and accessibility, I came across this subreddit under the question "Why isn’t sign language/asl taught alongside a child’s regular education?". I'm a Spanish and Italian interpreter and ive had the privilege to learn from several interpreters in different languages, one of them being ASL. Given my experience in the field, I have noticed the urgent need for more interpreters of sign language (not just ASL), and one of the thoughts I has was similar to what the ques ..read more

Hello! This is for deaf people that have experienced ASL language oppression at work. Background: I am hearing and work closely with 2 Deaf people. I grew up in the Deaf community, went to NTID, and am fluent in ASL. I am not an interpreter so that's not my role. Recently a supervisor told me that in our meetings with the full DHH team, only 2 of the group are D/deaf, that we must take turns to speak or sign. I asked for clarification from my boss. My examples were we were discussing a client and I, being hearing, have a lot of privilege like taking notes and hearing everything. A Deaf cowork ..read more

I married a Deaf woman, and I'm Deaf myself okay? Disclaimer. And I'm a dad. I tell Dad jokes all the time but it's really hard to translate them in sign language as often they're puns or play on words. For example; Dad jokes are awesome And I'm here to show you Y Gets me confusion with Deaf people who don't know that why and y sounds the same. So I'm here to ask if anyone knows good Dad jokes that can be done in sign language. submitted by /u/Deaftrav [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Hey! I am a student at Ohio University and I really want to become much more involved in Deaf culture/improve my ASL. I study Hearing Speech and Language Sciences (I want to be an slp), but I want to enforce the emphasis on language in my future as a clinician. I want to be able to communicate with Deaf/HoH children, as well as parents as I think it is so so so important to know ASL in my field. I learned about Gallaudet in 2021 and ever since attending has been a passion of mine. I am not the greatest signer but I will have a certificate titled "Deaf Resources and Liasion" which means I have ..read more

Seeking Advice for Deaf-Friendly Wedding DJ

Hi everyone! My fiancée and I are planning our wedding, and we want to make sure it's as accessible and accommodating as possible for everyone, including our deaf and hard-of-hearing guests. Specifically, we are trying to find a wedding DJ who can provide lyrics on the screen during the reception and possibly incorporate lights for audio and visual cues. The lyrics would be the most important thing for us. We'll have interpreters for the wedding but we would still like these kind of visual cues to add to the experience. We've asked around but every DJ we've talked to has expressed how difficu ..read more
