John Stride is the New Forest National Park Authority’s new Net Zero with Nature Programme Manager. With transformational change needed to address our climate and nature emergencies, John will develop and lead our ‘Net Zero with Nature’ programme with partners across the New Forest National Park. What is the Net Zero with Nature Programme and why does the National Park have one? The climate emergency is a big and global challenge. It often feels too big and complex to tackle at a local level. We all know the impact that this is having on the natural world, but nature is also part of the solut ..read more

Artist Alex Julyan reflects on her residency in the New Forest

My work isn’t made with signature materials, or by a particular method. Instead, each project is directed by an intention to draw on diverse ideas, histories and experiences, and to pull these threads towards a central point. Playfulness, absurdity and chance hold a significant place in the process, as do the skills and knowledge of the people I encounter. Art isn’t an exact science, its edges are permeable and shifting, and it’s always contingent on the circumstances in which it’s made. In Preparation It’s customary to make lists when moving from one place to another. List-making serves a pra ..read more

Marcus Langelier My name is Marcus, and I have had three days of work experience at the NPA. During my placement here I have really enjoyed my time. I got to meet lots of people working in the NPA who were all extremely welcoming, very friendly and able to give me a really good introduction to what work at the NPA would be like. All of the staff immediately befriended me and I was able to work alongside them as if I had been long-time staff already. I am a second year college student at Brockenhurst college undertaking a level 3 extended diploma in photography meaning all the skills that I had ..read more

By Bird Aware Solent Throughout the autumn and winter, the New Forest coastline hosts an extraordinary array of migratory wading birds, ducks and geese. Some will have travelled all the way from Siberia – that’s a flight of around 3,000 miles. You may be wondering why the birds fly such a long way to get here, and what does the New Forest’s coastline have to offer them? The answer is simple: food! The New Forest is home to lots of marvellous mudflats, and when the mud is exposed at low tides coastal birds can access the wealth of food that hides beneath the surface (small marine animals ..read more

As the traditional Christmas carol The Holly and the Ivy goes: ‘…of all the trees that are in the wood, the holly bears the crown.’ Holly has been used to decorate homes and public buildings at Christmas since the 15th Century, and some of the ancient holly trees in the New Forest are even thought to go back to this time. The Druids, Romans and Celts brought evergreen foliage into their homes during winter, believing it had magical properties, and would ensure the return of spring. Christians adopted holly as a symbol of Christ’s crown of thorns, with the berries representing drops of blo ..read more

In celebration of #southasianheritagemonth we remember the 3,000 Indian soldiers who were patients at the Lady Hardinge Hospital in Brockenhurst between 1914-1915. These soldiers from the 7th (Meerut) and 3rd (Lahore) Divisions of the Indian Army Corps had fought in Flanders with the British Expeditionary Force. Today, three remain in Brockenhurst, buried at St Nicholas Church.   The village chemist, Mr Martin, photographed soldiers outside his shop in Brookley Road in December 1914. (Source New Forest Knowledge WAR1/B71)  Every effort was made to adhere to the patients’ Sikh, M ..read more
