In a recent AMA (Ask Me Anything) for the r/gynecomastia community on Reddit, I received this informed question: “Can you explain the internal flap technique to a layperson and why you choose to do this technique?” I provided a quick answer for that forum, but my internal flap technique is so important to my work that I wanted to explain the process more fully. Development of the Internal Flap Technique For Gynecomastia Surgery Back when I started performing surgical treatment for gynecomastia, most people had never heard the word. Everyone was familiar with “man boobs,” and they knew the con ..read more

The Answer May Surprise You Our society doesn’t always appreciate the benefits of being in good shape. This is a good thing and should be a part of everyone’s routine for mental and physical health benefits. There is nothing better than exercise to make one feel good on many levels. That’s probably why so many men ask, “When can I get back to the gym after gyno surgery?” Can Exercise Cure Gynecomastia? As long as we’re talking about exercise, I want to explain something to everyone. Gynecoma ..read more

Why Do We Get Gyno Surgery?
Westlake Plastic Surgery | Austin Cosmetic Surgery Center
by Dr. Robert Caridi

It’s a simple question. We know that gyno negatively impacts our daily lives — not for everyone, but for many guys who have it. It’s a benign condition, meaning it won’t harm us physically. But it gets into our heads, which becomes the fundamental problem with gyno. We try to ignore it, deal with it on our own. We try to hide our gyno by wearing clothes that camouflages the female-like breasts, and we avoid situations that may reveal our chests in public or — even worse — to someone special. We often are made fun of for having gyno. We try to ignore it, but it hurts. That hurt turns to shame ..read more

Can Being Overweight Cause Gynecomastia?

There is very little written about the relationship between weight and gynecomastia. This is important because of the high rate of obesity in our society. Does weight gain cause gynecomastia? If so, does weight loss result in the disappearance of gynecomastia? As a very busy gynecomastia surgeon, I observe firsthand the relationship between weight gain and gynecomastia. When a man gains weight it often accumulates in areas above their waists, like the abdomen, flanks, shoulders, face, and — yes — their chest area. This fullness can take on the appearance of female-like breasts and this is a s ..read more

Dr. C Opens Up About His Own Gyno Treatment

I thought you all would enjoy reading about my experience with gynecomastia treatment. Yes, I had treatment for what I called “older guy” gynecomastia. I’m still trying to think of a name for my type of gynecomastia that doesn’t make it sound old or insignificant. I haven’t written about it publicly until now. I never had gynecomastia personally until I hit the age of sixty. I was always in relatively good shape and I had a good body image of myself. I was generally happy with what I saw in the mirror. “The last straw was the appearance of my chest in a fitting Polo shirt.” Things changed whe ..read more

Is Your Doctor Qualified To Treat Gynecomastia?
Westlake Plastic Surgery | Austin Cosmetic Surgery Center

I founded the Austin Gynecomastia Center over a decade ago to accomplish a personal goal: simplify the diagnosis and treatment of gynecomastia. This needed to happen because it was quite obvious to me that there was too much confusion and misunderstanding regarding the condition. There wasn’t a “standard” general approach, even amongst surgeons.  How many boys have been told when they were young, “Don’t worry, the gynecomastia will go away on its own,” only to suffer the consequences for years, even decades. This bad advice resulted in no treatment, poor treatment, and even gaslighting ..read more

Can Exercise Get Rid of Gynecomastia?

Do chest exercises for gyno actually help? Before talking about the effectiveness of chest exercises to get rid of gynecomastia, let’s back up to the big picture. Gynecomastia is the appearance of a female-like breast in a man. The condition won’t physically hurt you — it’s all about how it looks. How do you know if you have gyno? For most men, it’s obvious when you have a feminine chest because there is a much thicker layer of tissue on the chest that limits your ability to feel your muscle, your chest area will appear rounded or pointy and not flat, and your areolas can be quite wide. Puffy ..read more

Why Get Your Gynecomastia Treated

This is a wonderful case to illustrate why gents get gynecomastia surgery and why I do so much of it. This young man and I crossed paths some years back and I found him full of personality and motivation. He had significant gynecomastia as you can clearly see in his pre-operative photos. I was not able to get any formal post-operative photos but he did send me some periodic selfies to update his progress. The saying “a photograph is worth a thousand words” holds true in his updates. You can see that he has lost a lot of weight and has gotten into great shape. His SMILE speaks volumes as to hi ..read more

Do I Need To Wear A Bra After Breast Augmentation?
Westlake Plastic Surgery | Austin Cosmetic Surgery Center
by Dr. Robert Caridi

I am often asked, “When can I stop wearing a bra after breast augmentation?” or “How long do I need to wear a bra after breast augmentation?” The answer to this question is very simple: it is essential that all breast implant patients wear a bra day and night for the rest of their lives! Evidently, there is much confusion and misunderstanding because patients are shocked when I tell them of the need for constant bra use.  Patients have told me that “My surgeon never really told me that I needed to wear a bra after breast augmentation” or, worse yet, “It’s not necessary to wear a bra ..read more
