Savanah Godwin is an Honors College Fellow from Hot Springs, AR, majoring in chemical engineering and minoring in Spanish. She studied abroad in Madrid last summer and discovered the benefits of a slower pace to life filled with breaks to reset one’s focus. Here’s a picture I took inside the Alhambra. It was a stunning view of the quaint Granada city, with rust-colored rooftops and speckles of trees dotting the sight. My interest in Spain was sparked when I started learning Spanish in high school. It is where the language originated and so it was only natural that I developed a curiosity fo ..read more

While abroad, Caroline found the powerful impact on learning that comes from being completely immersed in another language and culture. Strolling through the streets of Toledo! As I boarded my flight back to the United States after such an incredible month in Spain, I knew that I would be leaving a piece of my heart behind. Amelia Hirsch is an honors English education major and theatre minor from Kansas City, Missouri who studied in London, England, this summer through the Theatre in London program at the University of Arkansas. While abroad, Amelia discovered a wider range of what education can be outside of the traditional classroom setting. Attending a midsummer matinee I’m minoring in theatre, so naturally, I was very interested in the program as theatre is in the title. But I was also excited to have the opportunity to see London, which is an experience that doesn’t come by very often. I have grown up sur ..read more

Once Zoe Pitman (B.A. earth science, cum laude, ’23) discovered that students had not yet studied abroad in Antarctica, she knew she wanted to try. After years of research and applications, Pitman moved for a semester to Argentina (the gateway to the Drake Passage) to fulfill her dream and learn about climate change. In Argentina, Pitman was immersed in a new language, and the semester proved to be her most challenging. Her perseverance paid off – a week after her birthday, she was aboard an excursion to uncharted academic opportunities in the polar desert. During my freshman orientation, I ..read more

Peyton Mosman is a fourth-year Honors College Fellow from Dallas, Texas, who is studying psychology and social work. She interned abroad this summer in Dublin with an organization providing resources to the city’s immigrant communities. For Peyton, gaining a sense of self-reliance proved to be one of the most important lessons learned while overseas. Up close and personal with the Atlantic at Inis Mor on the Aran Islands in Ireland The way I see it, America and Ireland have one big thing in common: both are isolated countries. Ireland is a relatively small island off the coast of Europe. Th ..read more

Ben Pierce is a third-year Sturgis fellow from Fayetteville, Arkansas, studying history and political science. During his yearlong study abroad at the University of Edinburgh, he has had the chance to travel around the whole of Britain and gather a fuller picture of the island’s complicated histories. I wanted to title this blog post “Eighty Days in Edinburgh.” I liked the sound of it, the alliteration and whatnot. But the first bit is a lie because I have only been here sixty-three days. The second part, too, is slightly dishonest. I have spent my time abroad traveling throughout ..read more

This summer, I had the opportunity to spend three weeks traveling around Greece studying funerary customs throughout the various stages of civilization in the country (e.g., ancient Greek city-states, Byzantine Christianity, Turkish occupation, etc.). Given that my honors thesis explores death and the afterlife in the world of ancient Israel, Dr. Daniel Levine, who directed this program, suggested that this trip would provide excellent comparative material. Over the course of 18 days, our group visited 33 archaeological sites, some of which are not yet published, and 19 museums. Moreover, our ..read more

My name is Linden Mountain, and I am an incoming sophomore student in the College of Education and Health Professions. As a childhood education major and biology minor, I am preparing for my future as an elementary school teacher. During the May intersession term of summer 2022, I had the opportunity to study the Irish education system as part of the “Education in Ireland: The Art of Teaching” faculty-led program. Not only did this experience provide valuable insight into the structure of schooling, but it offered insight into the role that education plays in Ireland’s society.   When lo ..read more
