I have made this post before but I got embarrassed and deleted it. My mom is currently taking care of her mother (general age related issues - she is 90), and my dad was recently diagnosed with Alzheimers. My mom is someone who doesn't really ask for help, and I live out of state, so I am struggling with what I can do to help her. My current plans are Keeping a password manager for her (my dad was the passowrd keeper and computer guy) Going home to do some cleaning around the house (my dad was the cleaner of the family too) Managing all online accounts (like amazon or chewy for my grandma ..read more

Can a UTI cause early-onset Alzheimer's symptoms?

My father is 58 years old and has been having issues with his memory for about the last 6-7 months, but within the previous 3-4 months, it has rapidly progressed. He had an MRI scheduled, but his insurance denied it, and now we are appealing their decision, so we have to wait even longer before we can get his MRI done. On top of this, he has also been having issues with urinating for almost the same amount of time that he has been having problems with his memory. His PCP prescribed him Flomax, but that didn't help him in the long term. So, we recently took him to the Urologist and discovered ..read more

Transitions, placement, and grief

I hate Alzheimer’s. It’s also so difficult to understand unless you’re caring for/supporting a loved one with this disease. Just as you’ve accepted one stage/phase/decline another one comes… We’ve had a diagnosis for 4 years now and honestly it’s hard. My mom is early stage 6 and I can’t believe we’re here. It’s been a long 4 years but also I just thought we’d have more time with her at home before we had to move her to a memory care home. My sister and I are both in our 40s with preschoolers. I love my Mom so much, she’s only 68 and this is just not the retirement/end of life I want for her ..read more

End of life- feeding

My mother seems to be coming to the end of an almost 10 year fight with Alzheimer’s. She has recently taken a significant downturn, and will not feed herself. Her caretaker has been almost force-feeding, her, and she kind of whines and fights the whole time she is being fed. I am wondering if anybody has any experience with the ethics of self starvation and an Alzheimer’s patient? She does have an advanced directive that states no artificial nutrition, but I don’t know if that is limited to a feeding tube? I don’t know whether it is more ethical to continue feeding her or if her body is tryin ..read more

Advice about what to do in this situation.

Hello all, My father has been diagnosed with Alzheimer's and has had it for upwards of 5+ years now. In an effort to improve our situation and earn more, I had to move us into the city to be closer to my college less than a year ago. I've just recently learned (today), that when I'm at college, my dad has been going to neighbors and disturbing them by knocking on their doors or windows. The landlord has suggested that this may because he doesn't remember where I am, but that if I don't deal with this situation, then he will have to evict me because this has been going on for a while and I was ..read more

Father obsessed about old lawsuit

Hello all, My father is diagnosed with Alzheimer since 2020. We noticed first signs of the disease in 2017 when he became obsessed with a lawsuit he lost against an insurance company regarding a workplace accident 20 years ago. He was probably treated unfairly back then. But since 2017 he can't stop thinking about that and we see he is suffering deeply, he tried several times to reactivate the case which is not possible so he is convinced everyone is against him, that the multiple lawyers he saw are comploting together, that we are letting him down and so on. Sometimes it is quieter, he doesn ..read more

As you know Hal died by assisted suicide in Zurich last week. I had 2 days with all the 3 boys together afterwards and had a very small Irish wake. The next day they went on a memorial hike. Then we scattered. I’m back in the States DC area resting while my chest cold resolves and my MS symptoms calm down then I’ll fly west to home where youngest son will join me. There’s a small gathering of friends here too. The main memorial is in May. I thought we had his oddball credit charges in hand. .. But he has two Microsoft 365 accounts and a bunch of useless apple apps and of course several subscr ..read more

I'm here for the nonsensical statements. My mom was recently/officially diagnosed and has just moved into an assisted living facility. I'm angry most of the time I'm around her, I know I shouldn't be but just can't help it... Clearly I'm working through stuff of my own This being said, she made me laugh my ass off on Friday when she said "Are your kids sick? Why are they home with your wife? I thought they might have gotten sick because of the eclipse" .. Yup, time to buckle up. submitted by /u/Jnewfield83 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

How much of this is her BS ?

I’m having a hard time telling the difference between her crap talking or if she is having the hallucinations that can come. How much is she just saying KNOWING it’s BS vs. her dementia? Like telling my husband I told her to help me cut down a tree today…I asked her to tell me where the sprinkler head was that is buried when I turned it on so I could cut the tree limbs back that were hiding it. She wanted him to tell me to stop and I shouldn’t be doing it. I’m not sure she’s a good fit for memory care after the visit for the consultation. She is “high functioning “. She told me that I will ha ..read more
