From now until April 2023 I’ll be painting in Pukekura in Ngāmotu New Plymouth. I’m looking forward to seeing what comes during the process of making this work here in a place that I feel like I know so well. But I know that surprising things will happen, and I wonder how working in this place will impact me and the work. I’ll post updates here ..read more

Earlier this year I met Sunil and Ed, co-editors of the Journal of Visual Art Practice, in the process of having my article published. And just recently Ed asked if I was interested in coming on board as an Associate Editor for the Journal, which I am super excited about. They talk about their idea to position the journal forward-facing to practitioners and to engage a diverse audience in this article here . I’m looking forward to being involved with forging directions and discussions and bringing my perspective to the mix, as a woman from Aotearoa New Zealand, as a person who communicates thr ..read more

Artist in Residence at the Dunedin School of Art - Hotere Garden Oputae

Also in Port Chalmers, we went to Hotere Garden Oputae on top of the hill overlooking the harbour. Again, the gorgeous day made me happy to be outside, but this site speaks about the demolition of Observation Point - where Ralph Hotere’s studio was in 1993 - because the land was wanted for commercial development. The first sculpture I saw was Black Phoenix II (1991) and it was made out of an old hull of fishing boat that had caught fire at a Careys Bay boat building company. The charred and aged wood had so much character and the light coming through the red pieces of glass shone reminded me o ..read more

New work at the nkb gallery in Auckland from 9th-28th February, a group show with Paul Woodruffe, Katherine Simpson, Cathy Carter, Barry Ross Smith, and Neal Palmer. Here’s a link to the exhibition page - click here This is one of the paintings in the show, it’s oil, ink, pigment on heavy card, and it’s about 700x500mm. I made it from looking at video footage that I took on Mt Taranaki of the pools up from Dawson Falls. I went up there and lugged all my painting stuff, along with camera gear, and I spent the afternoon there taking photos, filming and drawing, and really just getting to know t ..read more

I'm excited to be part of the latest edition of the Art Ascent publication, with one of my paintings selected for a feature on the theme of happiness, along with 23 other artists from around the world.   This painting talks about the interconnectedness of our bodies and minds. Using a metaphorical comparison of landscape and the body, this work looks at places of inhabitation, and invites the viewer into a psychological landscape.   Just like a landscape is a place of inhabitation, so the human body is a place of inhabitation for the human psyche.  Skin and bone is wh ..read more
