Light on the Cottonwoods | Copyright 2017 by Keith Bond | 5 x 7 inches | oil   It is always a lot of fun painting these little gem studies.   With them it's all about expressive brushwork and simplification. Less is more. Details are kept to a minimum allowing the underlying abstract design to carry the painting. It's about a big statement in a succinct package.   And it's about the pure joy in simply the qualities of the paint. The varied brush strokes and textures are like eye candy.   A little painting can say a lot.   Add this little gem to your collection. It wi ..read more

Hapuna Beach | Copyright 2017 by Keith Bond | 16 x 24 oil | $3200   Second painting of the new year!   I know, it sounds cliche, but I really did do this painting barefoot on the beach. Ok, not this painting, but did do the plein air study for this painting right there in the sand. And yes, I was barefoot.   Hapuna beach is a popular beach with both locals and tourists. And even though I got there towards the end of the day, there were still plenty of people playing. I definitely attracted attention as I walked across the beach with all my gear in my backpack.   ..read more

Trip to China

Tied Together | Copyright 2016 by Keith Bond | 10 x 8 oil I recently returned from a 10 day painting trip to Southern China. What an absolutely wonderful experience it was.   I feel very honored to have been invited by my friend Wei Jason Situ to join a group of about 15 fabulous artists traveling to China to paint. Painting in Jason's hometown and surrounding villages and cities, we witnessed the quickly disappearing old-world way of life as China moves towards modernization.   Among some of the most endangered are these old fishing boats. Many pe ..read more

Winter Sunset in the Rockies | Copyright 2016 by Keith Bond | 7 x 7 oil on mounted linen   Despite the cold, there is a peaceful stillness and quietude that settles in as the sun dips behind the mountains.    This little gem was a study in experimentation. I had a lousy reference photograph, so I used memory and imagination to play around with color and values to get the mood I was after.    It was great fun to paint!   Will be auctioned over the next 24 hours - or so.    How the auction works: You are bidding on the painting UNFRAMED Opening bid is o ..read more

Aspen Light | Copyright 2016 by Keith Bond | 5 x 7 oil Since autumn is my favorite season - hands down - and since Hawaii has no autumn, I have had to fulfill my cravings in the studio.  This little gem was a sketch to work out ideas for a larger painting (20 x 28) that I am currently working on (contact me if you want first dibs on seeing finished painting - I'll email you privately before it's posted publicly). This little gem is from one of my favorite places in Northern Utah - near Snow Basin ski resort. The red/orange trees are big tooth maple. Also on the hillside are gamble oaks ..read more

Elk Island by Keith Bond 24 x 24 oil   An artist friend of mine recently posted something on Facebook that caught my attention and gave me pause. He said basically that because of all the terrible things going on in the world he doesn't post his paintings very often. He said that we cannot hide behind posting pretty pictures and pretend that there is nothing wrong with the world.   I would argue that precisely because there are terrible things in the world, we need the pretty pictures more than ever.   We must not willingly let go of t ..read more

Active Lava Flow

Living on the Big Island of Hawaii means that we live close to the most active volcano in the world. Last week, after weeks of anticipation, the current active lava flow finally reached the ocean.     My family hiked 8.5 miles round trip to view the lava flow. Yes, even my littlest ones made it. Then again, we've trained them to be good hikers. I headed out there about noon to do some plein air painting. My wife and kids met up with me just after sunset. Immersed in Hawaii

Since moving to Hawaii, most of the paintings I have done have been plein air (painting on location).    My greatest reason for focusing primarily on plein air is to immerse myself in my new environment - especially the ocean. By strengthening my understanding and love of Hawaii, I am better able to paint Hawaii with the same authenticity that I paint aspens or the rocky mountains.    I am striving to better see, understand, and capture the color, light, and textures of Hawaii - in all its variety - mountains, volcanoes, jungle, desert, and yes, the ocean.     I ..read more
