Earth Day - Sustainability Hacks
Modern Botany

UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL WITH JOHN Murray co-founder of modern botany I was trying to think back when I first started to awaken to ‘doing my bit for the planet’ and where I kick-started my sustainability journey. I remember, back in the 90’s, I was reading an article by a global celebrity who shared that an individual could waste up to 4 gallons of water by leaving the tap running whilst brushing teeth twice a day. That was a wakeup call for me and since then have put that learning into action! I have evolved to a more reflective manner of living that now allows me to see the world and my daily ..read more

FOREST BATHING: MEMORIES AND SCIENCE
Modern Botany
by Simon Jackson

I always carry with me a fond memory as a boy walking in the woods of Hubbard’s Hill in Lincolnshire near where I was brought up. I can still see those towering pines touching the clouds and smell the invigorating aromas of cedarwood and hew, as I walked with my family. There was a feeling of happiness, security and wellbeing in those woods and a sense of time standing still. Time did however pass, and I have since lived all over the world with my work as a scientist in places like the rain forests of the Amazon and South East Asia, to woodlands in Japan and South Korea. But no matter where ..read more

A Love Letter to the Soil
Modern Botany

A love letter to the Soil Valentine’s Day is looming, and we are huddled together in our Modern Botany HQ strategising what to prepare for this year’s big commercial feast. And then it struck us that we did not want to participate in this at all, but yet wanted to express in an honest way what we and our Modernbotanist’s really love and are passionate about, without the fake hearts and roses bit! All roads led to ‘the Soil’, which as you know, is the core and heart of our brand. So here is my love letter to the Soil! When I was a boy, growing up in rural Ireland we lived on a small farm hol ..read more

Dr. Simon Jackson Talks Recovery Cream The Christmas and New Year rush left us with little time to write in the journal about what seems to be the latest love of our tribe members lives - our new Recovery Cream. Just like our other hero products, Modern Botany Recovery Cream is a multi-purpose saviour to heal dry skin as well as being an antidote for life’s knocks and scrapes which our skin takes the impact of. We also think that the name perfectly captures just what we all need right now - some time to recover from all the world has thrown at us which our skin has also been paying for.  ..read more

Sometimes the simplest habits are also the most effective. Strip back your self-care routine with our collection of essential products, made with 100% natural ingredients, and let nature do the hard work.    What does this look like in practice? At Modern Botany, we choose to bypass the long, illegible ingredient lists and the formulas combining tiny amounts of hundreds of ingredients – all for the sake of marketing – in favour of a decidedly more minimal approach.    We know that skincare products are at their best when they contain no more than five active ingredients ..read more

How we harvest our calendula and chamomile
Modern Botany
by John Murray

Since they were first sown in April and May, our crops of calendula, Roman chamomile and German chamomile have taken wonderfully in the herb garden at Modern Botany HQ, helped along by the sunny weather we’ve seen in West Cork.    We practised effective weed management in the weeks following the sowing with anti-invasive means, to avoid chemical alternatives.Since then, the weeding has been overseen by our co-founder John Murray on his hands and knees – it’s not an easy job, but a remarkably rewarding one. He and Dr. Simon Jackson pick the calendula flowers by hand, and the cham ..read more
