I must apologise for being a bit slack and not doing my winner’s report for WAGS on Wednesday the 21st and now I have to do one for the 28th as well, so I am going to try and combine them. Firstly I must thank the weather gods as both days had very fickle weather conditions that favoured Jo-De7. On the 21st we had 7 brave starters who ventured out on rainy bleak day. The early starters got away in a nice 10kn northerly breeze leaving Blue Moon and Jo-De7 to wait round the start line for another half hour or so, during which the breeze dropped out to under 5kn and the front boats had disappeare ..read more

A good sized fleet logged on for WAGs this week thanks to a gorgeous day and promising weather forecast. Being the first Wednesday of the month, the Garnet Rock course was scheduled. Starting into a 15 knot south-easterly, we crossed the line hardening on a starboard tack with the intention of heading back in behind the protection of the reef further out. However the tide was so low and the reef so prominent, that it was decided not to tempt fate and so we carried on all the way, tacking only to clear Reef Point tripod. It was a glorious leg to Garnet pointing directly at the mark with the sai ..read more

Hi All. BOM had issued a strong wind warning on Tuesday for Wednesday then cancelled it at 10 am Wednesday, this probably is the reason only 9 boats with a total of 35 persons on board ventured out. The course was to Garnet Rock, with westerly winds most boats gull winged to Reef Point then it varied from tight reach to hard on as the wind varied in strength. (normal westerly) The return to Reef Point was a lot more relaxed with the wind in the rear quarter. As we rounded Reef Point, Full Tilt, Double D and Downtime all had a good lead on us, the wind was strong enough for Sentier to get ..read more

It was a fine blustery day that greeted the fleet for what should have been the first week of the month Garnet Rock course. As the breeze was gusting to 25+ knots it was decided that we should sail the Deception Bay course including Godwin Beach. 10 boats and 36 sailors enjoyed the conditions. Starting only just ahead of Catalina and 3 minutes behind Sentier we were not at all confident of troubling the scorers… We caught Sentier by D’bay Red but were unable to pass them until half way down the tight reach to Caboolture River mark. We both passed several monohulls including O.D. and Jen ..read more

The second day, WAGS. was nearly a repeat of the first race:  same course, a iittle more wind, which had also backed to NE’ly.  Therefore we decided to start with the asymmetric spinnaker.  That proved to be a good choice of sail.  Kaveinga’s speed increased to 7 kn and more.  The wind was veering and backing similar to the previous day, but had risen to about 15 kn.  Therefore we could not lay GB after rounding CR without tacking twice, fortunately always into a lift.  After rounding GB a lot of spinnakers followed us to DB.  We hoisted the spinnaker on ..read more

Australia Day Race 26/01/2021

Tuesday, Australia Day, dawned with a cloudless sky and just the hint of a breeze.  By the time I had rigged the boat the wind had more or less settled on about 7 kn varying approximately between ESE and ExS.  Our start line was rather busy with yachts from the MBBC and those of the NCYC approaching.  We had hoisted our Spinnaker one and a half minutes early, and in order to cross in time had to sail parallel to the start line to spill some wind.  But that put us to windward and clear air.  Both MOONDANCE and HAPPY DAZE had started ahead, both, however, without Spinnak ..read more

A much belated report for the Saturday before last. Our apologies The day presented 15-20 knot NE winds, 20 boats and 70 sailers. About Time started mid field in 10th place. We followed the field towards Reef Point sitting behind Kaveinga heading in towards the reef. Kaveinga suddenly stopped and dropped all her gear, thinking she had hit a rock or the reef we decided to tack. Turns out she hadn’t hit anything, rather an injury to the captains foot ( hope it’s on the improve Claus). Anyway back to the race, we rounded Reef Point behind Crisma, Utopia, Zingara, Moondance, and French Kiss. We ho ..read more

For once BOM was right on Wednesday with SE-ESE winds at 15-20 knots. A good turnout with 14 boats taking part in the race to Bribie Cardinal and back. In our first start of the year. About Time started 4th behind Zingara, Double D, and Rooger. It was ideal conditions for our new screecher and once deployed we were able to reign in both Zingara and Double D on the first leg whilst dodging a large tree branch drifting across the rhumb line. (There was some discussion back in the club about us going above Zingara. We were surprised as we always endeavour to go below smaller boats ..read more

RUM RACE! Saturday’s SAG’s was held in ideal conditions with a SE to E breeze of 8 to 12 knots. I was initially going out on my own but at the last minute Allan jumped ship from Utopia to join me. First away was Pura Vida follow up by Moondance 6 minutes later and then followed closely by Carisma, Utopia and French Kiss. We had a good reach to D Bay Red still chasing down Pura Vida and a work to the Bribie Island cardinal. We manage to squeeze around the mark without tacking and headed the fleet of 27 boats back. We popped the kite and Allan did a sensational job keeping it full. We discussed ..read more

As we are relatively new to MBBC we have been enjoying the 4 or 5 SAGS races that we have been involve in. Dirty Deeds is one of those Catamarans that has had quite a pedigree in its racing history, so Luke and myself (Russ) and Luke’s eldest son, Alex (Captain) have been doing a great job of slowing it down in the course of figuring out what she can do. We have just built a new mainsail for her and are in process of building new headsails and all new Down Wind sails so I guess when we have them all on and working for us, we may have to start a little later than we do now. Saturday’s race was ..read more
