When It's Quiet, Get Creative...

During my career, I always felt I was a superior storyteller combining an entertaining delivery with an educating style that explained the WHYS of meteorology.  The challenge for weathercasters comes when the weather goes quiet for days.  How do you keep the home folks tuning in?  Be creative & use your time to be a teacher.  Let me try.  For now, nothing is going on until NEXT week.  So what can I show you that's "unusual" weather-wise?  How about the deep East Coast that has brought us very dry air and cleared out the whole Gulf of Mexico. Bark Was Worse Than Bite, Storms Long Gone

When I went to sleep last night, winds were rocking & computer models were bringing a line of storms across SE LA/MS between 3-6 AM. That proved to be correct, but rainfall was spotty with only .19" at my house while MSY received 1.14".   SPC had a Tornado Watch up for the North Shore through 2 AM, but they did not issue a new one farther to the east.  Why?  What happened to our severe threat?  All I can think of is the upper energy associated with a broad Rockies trough raced to the NE away from us.  In addition, the southern stream (sub-tropical) weakened an ..read more

Southern Storm Threat As Upper Low Heads To Northeast

As I mentioned yesterday, SPC was including LA/MS in levels 2-3 for severe weather this afternoon and tonight.  Their thinking hasn't changed and they issued a Tornado Watch for areas to our west & north until 8 PM.  That Watch area is likely to shift over us later tonight.  Let's review the why. The upper trough is advancing eastward with several disturbances rotating through it.  Where the base of the trough splits (lime green circle) from the sub-tropical southern jet stream is where the greatest upward lift occurs.   SPC has been sounding the al ..read more

High Severe Risk Here After Dark On Monday

Yesterday FOX 8 issued a FIRST ALERT for  Monday night into early on Tuesday and today SPC concurs that a severe threat is coming.  In fact, SPC (Storm Prediction Center) has raised the severe threat to level 3 (Enhanced) for much of Louisiana & Mississippi for tomorrow AFTER DARK.  We begin with the area under greatest risk and then shift to the time line.  The top graphic is valid for today with the second valid for Monday. T-Storms are beginning to fire off over western Oklahoma right where SPC indicated they would. Newly engaged Hannah Gard showed us the mode ..read more

Beautiful Weekend, But Another West Coast Storm To Bring Severe Threat Here

It's kind of hard to even talk about potential severe weather when what we have currently is so beautiful.  Today's weather is courtesy of being on the back side of an upper low that is now over Charleston.  Brisk northern winds have brought us slightly drier air, but bright sunshine with the higher sun angle quickly warmed temps into the mid 70s. So why & where is the severe threat coming from?  Blame it on another western trough that will not cut off like the last low.  Newly engaged Hannah Gard put out a FOX 8 First Alert this morning, while SPC moves the se ..read more

Let It Snow, Let It Snow...

Yesterday I showed you the satellite views from space of the snow cover across the mountains out west.  i went on several web cams to find how that looks from the ground.  And to think some folks wake up to these type of views every day! So we know there has been above normal/average snowfall for most of the mountains out west, but some folks out east across the northern plains have seen little snow...until yesterday & today.  These are scenes from Minneapolis after overnight snowfalls. The radar views show a band of heavy snow (4-8") stretching from nort ..read more

Nuisance Rains Tonight, Heaviest Staying Offshore

We started pretty this morning with clouds increasing during the day and a cool light rain arriving after 2 PM.  SPC is not indicating a severe threat as the warm air sector is remaining well south of the Louisiana coast.  In fact, the Weather Prediction Center's heavy rain map has the bullseye way down over the Gulf. So what is causing this afternoon's ugly weather if it's not a frontal boundary?   Remember that "cut Off" upper low over the Southwest?  It's now on the move coming our way in several pieces. Clearly the T-Storms are well offshore, except ..read more

Quick Shot Of Cold Air Before Spring Arrives

The Vernal (Spring) Equinox occurs Tuesday evening at 10:06 PM marking the official start of astronomical Spring.  It will feel more like late Winter tomorrow morning as many spots well north of Lake P. dip into the 30s.  Here's the latest update from the NWS. After seeing how accurate the computer models were with our weekend rains, I'm not about to go against their guidance regarding morning forecast lows except to say I don't believe it will get that cold.  Why would I feel that way?  To get to the predicted lows 1) skies must stay clear and 2) winds must decr ..read more

Bravo Models! Nailed Timing Of Sunday's Storms

I guess all of us over 40 remember the times BCG? (Before Computer Graphics)  I started in the early 70s with paper maps & grease markers on plexiglass.  No satellite loops either with just a static black & white view many hours old.  Fast forward 50 years and we have computer models predicting weather 16 days in advance!  Sure they're not very accurate that far out, but I'm impressed on how good the accuracy is getting 3-5 days out.  Remember, the main Metairie parade was cancelled on Friday based on the models. This morning's complex has already cleare ..read more

It Better be Stormy On Sunday!

All the local weathercasters said yesterday that Saturday would be the best day of the weekend, and were they ever right.  What a beautiful Saturday with several parades happening for tonight.  For days computer models have been locked in predicting that Sunday was going into the dumper/dumpster for the main St. Patrick's Day parades.  Nothing seems to have changed the thinking.  NWS is still alerting us to the potential heavy rainfall coming in waves tomorrow. Last night's cold front has sagged into the Gulf and has fallen apart as a new boundary is trying to redeve ..read more
