Insulating the water heater part 2. Holey socks were filling up my drawer because I felt bad discarding them when I knew they could be repurposed. One day it hit me to use them to further insulate my water heater. As discussed in a previous post, I’ve insulated much of the piping from the tank with foam but there remained angles that I couldn’t cover. Finally, a use for those worn out socks. I simply wrapped them around the exposed spots and incorporated shreds of insulation from an insulation bag that probably came from a food delivery. To keep everything in place, I tied the socks to themse ..read more

In April of this year, we partnered with two of our host farms to start selling finished compost in 5 gallon bags. They are available to everyone, whether you’re one of our food scrap composting customers or not (food scrap composting customers get 1 or 2 bags for free, per year, and a discount on additional bags!). We deliver finished compost to your door in sturdy polypropylene bags. If you are one of our food scrap composting customers, we can take the empty bags back from you at a later date when we come to empty your bucket. When we started Circle Compost in 2016, we never expected that bucket theft would be such a big problem. Now that we’ve been in business for 3+ years, we’ve become sadly accustomed to, in fact, expectant of, at least a few buckets being stolen every single week. So when Amanda Hoover, who we knew had two of our buckets stolen from her very quickly when she attempted to use our composting service, reached out about writing an article for Billy Penn on the subject of compost bucket theft, we were happy for her to shed some light on the topic. Here’s the article, and we hope it will lead t ..read more

We were shocked and very upset to read recent news about high levels of PFAS chemicals in bagasse (sugarcane) based packaging products. Per the following link, BPI is aware of this issue and working to resolve it with manufacturers of these packaging products: https://bpiworld.org/BPI-Blog.html/6650181. The issue has created a nightmare for restaurants like Chipotle and sweetgreen, who are truly innocent in these matters as they absolutely were under the assumption that these materials were 100% compostable. Until we are confident that changes have been made to these products such tha ..read more
