Odd food intolerances?

I have lived my entire life with GI issues and have finally had a food and additives intolerance test done privately. As suspected, the list is long, but there are some things I genuinely don’t understand. How can very random, specific food show intolerance when their individual ingredients don’t? I’ll provide some examples of intolerances I don’t understand, please feel free to speculate: beef jerky (but not beef) corned beef (but not beef) mayonnaise (but not eggs, oils or vinegar) brown sugar chilli sauce (but not chilli pepper) pork sausage (but not pork) chocolate (but not powdered choc ..read more

Can I still eat shrimp?

I’ve just developed a crustacean allergy. Yesterday I had snowcrab legs for the first time. I did not get hives, but I got swollen lymph nodes, dizziness, and swollen throat. My grandma had shellfish allergy and one of my siblings has it too. It’s been over 24 hours and my throat is still sore, but I’ve been breathing fine. I’ve been eating shrimp without a problem for years. Can I still eat shrimp as I have been, or is there too strong of a chance that my crab reaction will make me allergic to shrimp now too? submitted by /u/Puzzled-Island2663 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Biphasic reaction question

Hello all, I had my third anaphylactic reaction of my life yesterday (first was when I was an infant). It went about the same as the other one in my memory; tingle in mouth/bump on lip, nausea, vomiting, wheezing. Used epi, went to hospital, got prednisone and some other prescription, and been home. Felt fine all day. While eating dinner tonight (about 30 or so hours after reaction) I had a stomach pain (think I was just gassy) and then got a bit stressed and was taking deep breaths to try and see if it felt like I was wheezing. It didn't, but ever since, I've felt like I really need to take ..read more

My son had hives all over (and a trip to the ER) the very first time he had peanuts, at 9 months. He had another reaction, maybe to pea protein or maybe to dairy (more on that in a minute) a couple of weeks later. We subsequently went to an allergist and did a full panel skin prick test. It came back positive for peanuts, tree nuts (including coconut), eggs, dairy, sesame, wheat and oats. But he had eaten a bunch of those things with no reaction, so we did a blood test. None of the IgE numbers were above 20, and the wheat and oat numbers were low enough that the doctor said to keep eating the ..read more

My 3 year old daughter has an egg allergy, and we're just starting to get to the age of birthday parties and all that good stuff. We have an event with our extended family this weekend that will have lots of other toddlers, and I want to send around an email to all the parents letting them know best practices for helping to keep our daughter safe. In an ideal world, I would prefer all of the kids wash their hands after eating any cake/cookies, but are wet wipes an appropriate replacement for that? I've seen that hand sanitizer gel is not, but I don't see much about wet wipes. Would love any i ..read more

Hey everyone! I'm allergic to eggs, dairy, peanuts, treenuts, seafood, shellfish, and sesame seeds, although thankfully i can tolerate slight cross contamination so that widens my variety of foods i can eat. I have a pretty varied diet from years of navigating the food world. My question is, how do you guys answer people when they say "what DO you eat?!" because i eat so many foods! its not as simple as naming a list when i can eat thousands of foods. i always blank and never know how to respond. what do you guys do? edit: it is very validating that i'm not the only one who gets a little peev ..read more

My daughter had an anaphylactic reaction to peanuts when she was 1 years old. She is 7 now and recent scratch test shows she was allergic to peanuts, cashew and walnuts. We signed up for OIT, and the in the initial test, she was able to eat walnuts with no issue. She also ate about 1 peanut and ended up with a stomach ache. And now one of the options presented to us was xolair. But I’m wondering, before committing to a monthly shot, how could we verify she is still anaphylactic allergic to peanuts or cashews? Are there options such as requesting to eat actual nuts at the hospital? submitted ..read more
