I'm not sure if this would be allowed here. Please delete if it isn't. I picked up a bin of some of my mom's old belongings, and in the bin were some of my grandfather's old stuff. He was a jewelry maker. I understand that nobody can truly help me here, as the stones aren't directly in front of y'all, but perhaps if someone could tell me what I should be expecting when I take them to be appraised. Some of them have labels, and some labels have been rubbed off or removed over the years.
I'm ignorant when it comes to a lot of this. Did I just potentially stumble on thousands of dollars in g ..read more

Quite literally, the first time i’ve tried my hand at making earrings! My only prior experience with jewellery making has been a simple steel 5 of spades necklace!

I just have a few questions as I’m looking through a list provided by a friend in the same work. Buffing compounds.. do the handheld compound stick things work for jewelry making?
Bench pin.. any recommendations there for best easiest to use one?
Best torch setup?
Types of pliers I need to start with??
Do I want my wire dead soft or hard??
What size and gauge of a sheet or metal should I get to start with??
Also looking at using ceramics as my inset. What is the best thing to use to cut prints out of an ashtray/plate??
Edited to add thank you for the help it’s greatly appreciated ♥️

Hi all,
I make high quality dog gear with custom stainless steel or brass metal name plates. The steel plates are about 1.5mm thick. I currently stamp the letters on them with a hammer. I’m looking for a more precise way to stamp them. What would you recommend? Any machines or other methods?

I had a pair of these earrings that I love but they quickly started to break down, the paint would peel off and they would turn green (granted I slept with them on and showered), so I got a new pair and I want to make them last a long time. Is there something I can paint over them to make them more resistant to wear and tear?
I used clear nail polish on my old ones but that didn’t really help.
