I have no friggin’ idea if that’s gonna work… we’ll have to see what things will look like once there’s clay on it, giving more stability to the structure. And no, I don’t want to add more stuff in between; would sort of reduce the airy quality I have in mind for this piece. #sculpture #art #sculpting #armature #artistsoninstagram #artistoninstagram https://www.instagram.com/p/B2cNQZzodQn/?igshid=nvkn26nql939 ..read more

Progress, albeit slow. . . I can appreciate Polymer Clay for what it is and its uses, but I doubt we’ll ever really be besties. It is not conducive to my workflow, wanting to go fast and broad in the beginning, eventually honing in on the details. Polymer Clay always needs to be laboriously and time consumingly conditioned in small batches, and then it always has a certain wobbly consistency before curing, which makes handling the piece a royal pain in the ass. I will find a material that allows me to go bigger, more conducive to my workflow, and neither requiring mold making or the need for ..read more

It feels a bit like surgery… Well, it would have been easier using Monster Clay, just melting things on top of each other, but then again… for once I don’t want to have to think about or be encumbered by a mold. Or the necessity of having to create one. It will draw out the sculpting process, but it’ll allow me for more freedom in the long run I think.

The sacrum . I keep bouncing back and forth between projects, never satisfied and somewhat annoyed with my (perceived…?) lack of creativity. True, I have a long list of sculptures that I will likely spend the next five years working on, but the main problem at the moment is mental exhaustion and my inability to get into the right mindset for most of these sculptures. It’s the difference between client/commercial work and the personal and deeply emotional art I guess. At least for me, if superheroes and monsters do not have the ability to hold your interest all that much. . But since idling i ..read more

5 minute sketch, basic ear anatomy . . Stuck on STORM, or rather hitting a wall repeatedly; I decided to do something else; revisiting the good old anatomy sculpting practices and sculpted an ear from memory. I had wanted to do the whole set – ear, nose, mouth and eye – but then I felt like I would be falling asleep standing upright any second ? And so I figured tomorrow is another day. . . If you want to try it yourself, feel free to check out this tutorial on @cgcookie — http://bit.ly/sculpting_ear (oh, and Firefox seems to be having a problem displaying the video, but Safari and Chrome wo ..read more

An Artist’s Conundrum So, here’s the deal: Tumblr has its new “indecency filter” going, and not only to my dismay but many other artists as well. I’m not sure what to do about it, seeing as yes, my future work will include nudity, but not for indecency or porn-related reasons. It doesn’t even have anything to do with fetish, much like you wouldn’t put black stripes across any of the photographic reproductions of Rodin’s, Bernini’s or Michelangelo’s work (and so many more). Studying the human body in the nude, drawing it and reproducing it in clay is how we learn; we aren’t born with clothes af ..read more

What's the material that you use for the sculptures?
The Sculptress

It depends on which sculpture you’re referring to. The reddish colored material is Monster Clay (medium grade). If it’s grey it is wither Super Sculpy firm or Cx5, the latter of which is best be used with a waxer. The greenish material is castilene bu Chavant. Certain smaller poeces are often made of wood, found materials, or polymer clay. I hope that helps demystifying it ..read more

Do you have any advice for painting clay without losing the details of texture

If we’re talking about painting polymer clay that’s been cured, I’d suggest a thin layer of primer like Tamiya fine primer (very good coverage with small pigments, so details won’t be obscured). Then use acrylic paints for model makers; they are thin bot offer good coverage. They can be applied with a brush, but using an air rish would obviously be the best choice to prevent painting over details ..read more

Do you have any idea how I can make or buy something that behaves like ballistics gel? I made hollow molds of my feet with plaster-of-paris, and I'm trying to find out how I can make something like that so I can paint em and make little footprints up a tree

Hey there! I’ve never worked or even touched ballistics gel, so I don’t have a good tactile reference. All I know about its behavior is deduced from what I’ve seen of it on video footage. That being said, I think you could try casting the feet in latex, silicone or alginate. The latter is probably the cheapest but also doesn’t last as long. Silicone os the most expensive version, but it holds up well to all sorts of things you may expose it to, elements as well as other materials. It can usually be washed off quite easily and comes in a variety of shore hardnesses (a materials resistance to in ..read more
