It’s the return of Allergy Superheroes Allergy-Friendly Recipes! And what tastier way to return than with a timeless classic and family favorite, Chocolate Chip Cookies! I have to tell you guys, I have not been feeling the cooking/baking mojo for a long time. Not just 2020, but for a few years. I think it has to do with overall life stresses, and these things got pushed to the back burner of my mind–pun intended. I have continued to cook of course. After all, the family has to eat. However, I have fallen back on familiar and easy meals for quite a long time now. And for desserts lately, we ha ..read more

Using Epinephrine for the First Time
Allergy Superheroes Blog

We now come to how I used (and Kal experienced using) epinephrine for the first time. If you’ve read my previous posts, you understand our experience participating DBV Technology’s REALISE Peanut Patch Trial, and what we did to maintain Kal’s peanut tolerance once the trial ended. Please read those posts for context before continuing. Part 1 Part 2 When we left off, Kal was eating one Reese’s Piece every day as an oral peanut dose, to maintain his peanut tolerance. Our plan was to gradually increase his doses until he was consuming roughly one peanut daily (3-4 Reese’s Pieces.) We would then m ..read more

Oral Peanut Dosing: Hopeful, scary, & harder than expected

Following the Peanut Patch trial, we tried Kal on Oral Peanut Dosing. Read Part 1 for our experience participating in DBV Technology’s REALISE Peanut Patch Trial. For three and a half years, we followed the mundane pattern of “Patch On, Patch off.” Then it came time to end the trial. Daily life wearing the peanut patch Next Steps Ever since we began the trial, I’ve wondered what we would do after it ended. All previous data says that allergen tolerance requires regular exposure. If exposure stops, tolerance disappears. So I knew that we would have to do something to maintain Kal’s tolerance on ..read more

Disappointment with the DBV Peanut Patch

I wanted to share more about our failed food challenge from last month. But in order to do that, we need to backtrack, because I never fully shared what we were doing with the Peanut Patch to get to this point. Kal’s very first patch. This photo was taken on February 28, 2017, when my little guy Kal was still in kindergarten. This was the first patch he ever wore for the Viaskin REALISE Peanut Patch Study. Like a lot of people, I was extremely excited about the new Peanut Patches being developed by DBV technologies. When I learned that our local research hospital was going to participate in th ..read more

A few years ago I had the privilege of reviewing Amanda Orlando’s first cookbook Allergen Free Desserts to Delight your Tastebuds. I was thrilled to have the opportunity to review her latest cookbook, Everyone’s Welcome. I love supporting other people with food allergies in their business endeavors. Amanda’s latest cookbook is every bit as beautiful as her first one. The full page photographs make you salivate before you even start cooking. Amanda’s previous cookbook focused exclusively on desserts, but Everyone’s Welcome includes dishes for every course. It has everything from fancy din ..read more

Harvest Festival

Have you ever encountered a potluck event that turned out to be allergy-friendly? Well, that’s exactly what I did with our elementary school Harvest Festival! The Harvest Festival has been going on at our school since a few years before Zax started Kindergarten. (He’s in 5th grade now!!!) It’s a celebration of healthy food, local food, and building community. Each class creates a dish, usually incorporating ingredients from the school garden. Families are also invited to bring a soup, salad, or bread to share. Then there’s music and pumpkin decorating and crafts and fun activities for e ..read more

Viaskin Peanut, the revolutionary “Peanut Patch,” just announced that the FDA has accepted their BLA. The BLA is their Biologics License Application, which is an important element in getting FDA approval. DBV Technologies, the French company developing the peanut patch, has been on a roller coaster over the last few years. In total, Viaskin Peanut has performed 8 clinical trials on human subjects, involving over 1,000 patients and their families. Patient interest continues to grow, which means increased media visibility. That also means that they’ve received uncomfortable bad press duri ..read more

EpiPen Glove Box Heat Experiment

If you read my last EpiPen experiment post, then you saw my discovery that EpiPens heated on the dashboard of a car will fire less than half the time. Temperatures in the 180s and 190s Fahrenheit are clearly enough to damage an EpiPen. But will the heat inside the glove box also damage an EpiPen? It’s impressive that extreme heat compromises EpiPen device integrity. It’s also important to know. But most of the time when people leave their epinephrine in the car, they don’t leave it on the dashboard, in full sun, and facing south. It is either by accident, or because they store it there ..read more

When Food Allergies Disrupt Traditions
Allergy Superheroes Blog

Field Day is a quintessential spring activity for most, but where we live they’ve turned it into a team-building fall activity.  We had beautiful weather for it too, though maybe a little too hot. But it was nice that no one minded getting wet for the water games. When I think about how our district strays from the norm in terms of Field Day, my mind comes back to food allergies. Most adult opposition to food allergy accommodations is because it will disrupt their traditions. People think of PB&Js and cupcakes as an integral part of childhood. If they can’t give their children the ..read more
