No Hot Ashes have amounted a dedicated following in their humble hometown of Stockport, and played a considerable role in the underground circuit in Manchester. I have been lucky enough to have followed them for a considerable amount of time, watching their development in venues such as Jimmy’s, Sound Control (RIP) & their biggest headline set in Manchester Academy 2. The night of The Academy was special, and felt like the beginning of a propulsion to a greater height.  Since the announcement of their debut album in May, the Hardship Starship has had me wondering if they can produce an LP ..read more

NEW MUSIC: English Weather by The Recreation

Oldham based quartet The Recreation are set to bring out their latest track English Weather on Friday July 5th. Channeling the frustrations of one-sided love, English Weather sets off with a mellow vibe before building up; erupting into a combination of rolling riffs and punchy percussion. The track incorporates powerful vocals complemented by accelerating rhythms; and Baldwin (vocals) continues to supply us with that familiar twang which can be heard throughout the bands music. Making for a catchy summer tune; this is a track I can imagine crowds singing along to as the sun goes down. ARGH KiD @ Eagle Inn, Salford

Manchester United’s official poet has recently transformed his art from spoken word, to spoken word with a beat. A funky beat, at that, as punchy tunes such as Frank and new single Neighbours prove, bringing a new energy to the poetry that mancunian David Scott speaks, in Alternative Hip-hop project ARGH KiD. Tonight, the Eagle Inn pub in Salford hosts proceedings. Upon arrival, I’m greeted by David himself, who is welcoming everyone at the door. A nice touch, which sets up the warm connection with his audience, building throughout as even though the room in which support acts Narcissus, Dave ..read more

NEW MUSIC: From The Cave release new single ‘Get a life’

London-based trio From The Cave released their new single Get A Life earlier this month. The track has a very unique, almost dystopian vibe to it. With a catchy rhythm and ethereal vocals, it takes a range of different genres and combines them; something From The Cave do extremely well throughout their music. It particularly brings hip-hop and indie vibes to the table, and the lyrics creatively stem from an ‘Online Voice Generator’. “So I experimented with this idea of the robot lecturing me, or telling me off. It was something along the lines of “you’re worthless, and your band sucks”. Most o ..read more

The resurgence of Scottish indie music

In the past few years many of my favourite young bands have come from north of the boarder and especially in the indie rock genre. After years of having artists such as Biffy Clyro and Primal Scream but nobody following in their footsteps, suddenly there seems to be an influx of bands making an impact not just in their native nation but south of the border too. The ones that gained my attention first were definitely The Snuts, after seeing them last year at Live At Leeds, one of many festival shows the band performed throughout The UK and further afield. Their riotous rock and roll mentality h ..read more

Two albums released, one in the waiting, Big Thief have seen themselves grow from a small town cult band into one of the globe’s most important artists, and yet still they continue to stun their listeners. The music industry doesn’t particularly lack folk orientated indie rock music, but with Big Thief and co. there is something genuinely unique. Big Thief performing earlier this year – shot by photographer Mark Roscoe Trying to put your finger on what that ‘something’ could be isn’t hard to find at all, perhaps it’s Adrienne Lenker’s glowing sense of honesty in her songwriting, the ..read more

Today we are bringing you new music from up and coming Glasgow quartet Twenty Four. Made up of Jamie Goodwin (drums), Scott Canham (bass), Ian Lawrie (guitar) and Danny Adens (vocals), Twenty Four released their latest single 4am on Friday. The track has a grunge-rock vibe to it, using gritty riffs and raspy vocals highlighting the bands already well-developed sound. For fans of Catfish and the Bottlemen, Oasis and The View; the track talks about the events of a house party or ‘Gaff’. It brings up the recurring patterns young people get into of going out and getting into states. As one of thei ..read more

Just over a year since their sell out Manchester Academy 2 headline show, in which a 950 capacity room was packed out, No Hot Ashes return to the limelight in a more humbling settling. They’ve chosen the first venue they ever played in Manchester some 5 years ago. An intimate venue tucked away in the Northern Quarter, AATMA hosts their return whilst they introduce a familiar audience to a taster of new material. As the crowd come into the room, the sounds of MF Doom, OutKast and DJ Pied Piper warm up the audience quicktime, and they’re ready to go. The lights dim and the band run up onstage pr ..read more
