I'd like to run a scenario by y'all about a person I know who has been meditating for 30 years and get your opinion about if you think meditating was the key factor for this person's healing. Said person had a head injury with what i was told was a "hemorrhagic contusion", spent a week in ICU hospital, long term effects but functionally "normal". (Self care & self rehab, they had no insurance at the time) 5yrs later: Brain MRI showed holes from the injury on one side of their brain but they were still functioning at what appears "normal" & thriving in different areas than before injur ..read more

How to Quiet the Mind

I recently noticed that by deliberately thinking, "There is nothing to think about", my mind begins to grow quieter. At first, other thoughts might arise, like "Does this really work?", "Wow, my mind is actually quiet now," or "Haha, see, this isn't working." But over time, the number of these thoughts drastically decreases. This works because you are shifting your focus from the mind to simply being or to something else like breathing, sounds, or sensations. Another observation I made is that recurring thoughts tend to become less frequent, while unique thought, seem to happen more often. It ..read more

What's the roll of effort in meditation for you?

I know there is this concept of "right effort" I believe in Buddhism, though I don't know a lot about it. I'm mainly thinking of technique in mediation itself. Over the years I've found that as I've progressed that it's become aparrent that it often feels like walking some kind of knife edge. But also approaching it from that kind of anxious need to get it right is also wrong. It's definitely not an anxious need to get anything, you have already walked off the path at that point. But I definitely notice if I put in no effort then I'm just sitting thinking and day dreaming. If I try to force i ..read more

Would it be a great idea to hold your breath during meditation?

For example, before doing breathing meditation or mindfulness breathing, hold your breath for 60 seconds and do this 3 times, or another example, whenever you see your mind with a lot of intense thoughts or emotions (like anger), which are so difficult to keep your mind in a state of peace, so in this case you hold your breath. Would it be a good idea to acquire this habit or not? Would there be any problem? submitted by /u/SAIZOHANZO [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Hey there! So I just pretty recently got into meditation. I feel like I’m supposed to be learning things about myself or that it should be a little more challenging but it’s not, and makes me feel like I’m doing it wrong. I like it because it’s super relaxing and a good way to escape the chaos of life even if it’s just for 10-20 min, but I’m not so sure it has any deeper effect than that. I usually practice the mindfulness meditation, where you focus on your breathing and keeping your mind empty by letting go of any thoughts that come up. I have found that I am pretty damn good at not thinkin ..read more
