When I do my holiday research, I like to find food tips in other cities that are “local favourites”, rather than “tourist must-try'”. That’s why I decided to publish a Guide like this for Sydney – the city that I have lived and loved for the past ten years. This Guide is dedicated to people looking for good and cheap eats in Sydney (mostly in the CBD), nothing fancy. This post is not sponsored and the content reflects my honest and humble opinion of the Sydney food that I have tried and often have cravings for. How to read this Guide: Restaurants are grouped by c ..read more

【Sydney Food】Miso (World Square)

If you like Japanese deep fried pork cutlets, you will like Miso at World Square. Miso offers “teishoku”, traditional Japanese pre-set meal with a main dish, miso soup, bowl of rice and the chef’s seasonal picks. Oroshi Katsu Set, $16.8. Miso‘s deep fried pork cutlet never disappoints. With the crunchy and golden crust, hot and juicy centre with the slightest hint of pink, I think it’s the best deep fried pork cutlet in town. Miso Bento, $19.8. Kaminari Pork Set, $16.8. Curry Udon, $12.80. Hokkaido Bento, $23.80. Salmon Sashimi Don (take-away, lunch only), $16.80. {Mis ..read more

Every once in a while, I crave for a bowl of good handmade Chinese noodles. Every time that happens, Chinese Noodle Restaurant springs to mind. Apart from the original restaurant at Haymarket, which is always packed, there is a Chinese Noodle Restaurant on Bathurst Street in the city and one in Pyrmont. Chinese Noodle Restaurant (Bathurst Street) The menu. My favourite – stir fried handmade noodles with beef. I love the texture of handmade noodles. Chinese minced port noodles. This is Chinese Noodle Restaurant’s version of MLT (Ma La Tang), which is an off-menu item. It’s very diffe ..read more

【Sydney Food】O Bar and Dining – on top of Sydney

Did you know there is another revolving restaurant in Sydney other than the Sydney Tower? O Bar and Dining is hidden in one of the many business towers in the Sydney CBD, Australia Square. It has a fancy lobby lift design with corresponding bulbs that will light up when your lift comes. The atmosphere upstairs at level 47 at O Bar and Dining is completely different to the ice cold business setting downstairs. It’s bright and full of life. My lovely friend, Erica, took me here on a Friday lunch date. It was rather quiet for a Friday afternoon, which was probably why there didn’t appear to be ..read more

【Sydney Food】Yang Guo Fu Ma La Tang (Chinatown)

“Ma La Tang” (or MLT), is a Chinese phrase which directly translates to “hot and spicily cooked”. It was the new trend that took Sydney by storm in 2016 with many new MLT restaurants opening in different locations all over Sydney. Mike and I visited Yang Guo Fu Ma La Tang in Chinatown and loved it. I couldn’t quite put my finger on it – was it the wooden stools? The style of the tables? Tissue boxes? Bright red plastic bowls and utensils? The huge variety of ingredient selections? Or the fact that the space was packed with Asian foodies – there was something about Yan ..read more

【Sydney Food】Hawa Charcoal Chicken

Hawa charcoal chicken, the best Lebanese style charcoal chicken in town. The more famous charcoal chicken identity in Granville is commonly known as Al Jannah, which you will see as soon as you step out of Granville train station. I have tried it once many years ago, and I quite liked it. However, a friend who is familiar with the west introduced Hawa to us. According to him, Al Jannah is good, but Hawa is the best. He has been bringing charcoal chickens from Hawa to the city for us and it has never failed to impress us. One day, we decided it’s time t ..read more

If you think soy milk hotpot is not your thing, you must have not tried it at Masuya Suisan. I have had friends addicted to Masuya’s soy milk hotpot before. However, I tried it once at the original Masuya on O’Connell Street but it didn’t leave an impression on me. I decided to give it another chance this year after Masuya Suisan opened – this time, I fell in love! We ordered three different hotpots for comparison. Firstly, the Wagyu Snow Hot Pot (garlic soy milk soup), $48/pot. Aside from the good quality of the wagyu, the thickness of the sliced wagyu is slightly more s ..read more

【Sydney Food】Green Peppercorn Thai & Laos food

In many ways, Green Peppercorn is very much like Holy Basil (click here) that i reviewed earlier. It’s in a bar, serves Thai and Laos food, has a successful restaurant in the West before setting shop in Sydney CBD, serves fried ice cream! Banana Flower Salad (thinly sliced banana flower salad tossed with chicken, spices, coconut cream and aromatics), $15.90. This is the dish that keeps me coming back for more. This is one of Green Peppercorn’s specialty dishes that you can find at the back of the menu. I know what you’re thinking – Don’t worry, banana flower tastes nothing ..read more

【Sydney Food】Malay-Chinese (The laksa place)

Malay-Chinese is the laksa place in Sydney CBD. Malaysian cuisine has only found its place in the Sydney food scene in recent years. I remember when the first season of Master Chef aired, there were only a handful of Malaysian restaurants in Sydney, Malay-Chinese was one of them. It’s always busy during the lunchtime rush hour as it offers a wide range of dishes at reasonable prices. This was the menu when I visited in mid-2016. I just checked their website (click for menu) and noticed the price has increased since. The interesting thing is, you ..read more

【Sydney Food】Bottom of the Harbour (Balmoral Beach fish’n’chips)

My philosophy is, if I want to indulge in something deep fried and calories loaded, for example fish’n’chips, I only want to eat from the best. If you are like me, Bottom of the Harbour (also known as balmoral beach fish’n’chips) is the answer to your cheat day. Bottom of the Harbour is conveniently located on the esplanade of Balmoral Beach (click for more), a charming beachside community. I have been coming to Bottom of the Harbour for many years, the quality has been consistently excellent – and this is reflected in the constant queue outside the do ..read more
