Solar developers installed a record 14.6 gigawatt in the U.S. last year, almost double the total from 2015 and enough to make photovoltaic panels the largest source of new electric capacity for the first time. Solar panels on rooftops and fields accounted for 39 percent of new generation last year, according to a report Wednesday from GTM Research and the Solar Energy Industries Association. That beat the 29 percent contribution from natural gas and 26 percent from wind. The surge is further evidence that solar power has become an important part of the U.S. energy mix, even as President Donald ..read more

We could be headed for a solar power renaissance as costs keep dropping Politicians and lobbying groups still regularly dismiss the science of climate change and efforts to increase the use of cleaner forms of energy like wind and solar. However, any opposition to the spirit of renewable energy could be a moot point soon as the cost of energy acquired by modern photovoltaic continues to drop. The International Energy Agency reports that nations from all regions have seen the market for solar power growing this year. In fact, solar power is growing by as much as 25% in some countries as the pri ..read more

In Its Largest Quarter Ever, U.S. Solar Market Saw Nearly 2 MW of PV Installed Per Hour in Q3 2016 The United States solar market just shattered all previous quarterly solar photovoltaic (PV) installation records. According to GTM Research and the Solar Energy Industries Association’s (SEIA) Q4 2016 U.S. Solar Market Insight report , 4,143 megawatts (MW) of solar PV were installed in the U.S. in the third quarter of the year, a rate of one MW every 32 minutes. That pace is even faster today, as the fourth quarter will surpass this past quarter’s historic total. “Coming off our largest quarter ..read more

Economics to Keep Wind and Solar Energy Thriving On the plains of West Texas, new wind farms can be built for just $22 per megawatt-hour. In the Arizona and Nevada deserts, solar projects are less than $40 per megawatt-hour. Compare those figures with the U.S. average lifetime cost of $52 for natural gas plants and about $65 for coal. Environmental rules and government subsidies are no longer the key drivers for clean power — economics are. Companies including NextEra Energy, Duke Energy and others that invest billions in power plants are already moving forward with long-term plans to generate ..read more

Renewable energy to hit 9 percent of U.S. total in 2017 U.S. renewable-energy generating capacity is not only growing, but it is beginning to erode coal’s share of the electricity-generating mix, according to new data from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). The agency predicts renewable energy—particularly solar power—to continue growing. At the same time, a combination of renewable energy and natural gas are expected to further decrease the amount of coal used to generate electricity.  In 2017, renewable energy should account for 9 percent of U.S. electricity-generation capacity, accor ..read more

Here’s Where Utility-Scale Solar Is Thriving in the United States According to GTM Research’s Utility PV Market Tracker, as of August 2016, there are 11 states with 500 megawatts or more of PV projects in development and a total of 20 states with 200 megawatts or more under development. Historically, a few states made up the majority of utility PV installations, including California, Arizona and North Carolina. However, with last year’s extension of the federal Investment Tax Credit, the pipeline is at an all-time high, and the market is beginning to truly diversify geographically. Over the n ..read more

Community Solar Offers Alternative That Utilities Like ….. If rooftop solar is the clean-energy threat to utilities, then community solar farms are the middle ground traditional power companies can live with. Both produce electricity that utilities are required to buy under state incentive programs. And as the two models become more popular, they’re becoming a growing drag on revenue. The key difference is that community solar developers also invest in local power grids, helping share the cost of upkeep that’s become a significant complaint about the burgeoning rooftop power industry. As the i ..read more
