https://youtu.be/4Y2dahjgU_g Are you looking for a simple but well-written thriller that will still have you second-guessing how the ending will go? My Husband by Maud Ventura is your next read, then! I decided to take a break from the self-help genre and indulge in a little fiction. It most certainly was an indulgence; the story is written with care and detail. The original publication was written in French and translated by Emma Ramadan. If you are familiar with French art, then you should be able to pick up that certain, 'je ne sais quoi', in the writing style. In this article, I review My ..read more

February, Black History Month, is the perfect time of the year to contemplate the contributions that African Americans have made to American history. Me being an African American woman and a self-proclaimed author (like all authors), I find myself constantly seeking inspiration and validation from the black women who paved the way for me; black women who made it possible for me to create a platform about literature and to express my voice in my own works of writing. In this article, I will discuss how female descendants of enslaved people in America shaped the narrative of what it meant to be ..read more

In the original story of Little Red Riding Hood written by The Brother's Grimm, Red's mother asks her to take a basket of cake and wine to her grandmother. I wanted to add some cultural context in my rendition of the story: Lil' Red in the Hood, therefore in my story, Lil' Red's mama asks her to bring a basket full of traditional African American foods. What is in Lil' Red's basket? Collard greens, hot water cornbread and sweet tea; three popular and simple staples in African American cuisine. Below is the full recipe for Lil' Red's Mama's Collard Greens! I have to say, they are so delicious ..read more

I have only a few pages left to read of On Writing by Stephen King. I think I refuse to read the last few pages of this book because, although I am enthralled with King's story of becoming an author, his legacy as such, and his advice on writing itself, I feel like once I finish the book, I will definitely have no excuse to not recognize my own story as an author and to create my very own legacy in writing. Because everyone has a story. Every writer has a story. When reading about how King became editor of his high school newspaper, The Drum, I thought to myself, "Well, that's cool. Why didn ..read more

Haiku: Simple, Intense, & Direct

Haiku is a style of poetry born in the 17th century from Japanese culture. These simple and direct poems were a rebellious response to traditionally elaborate poetry but was not given its name until the 19th century. Today, haiku continues to fascinate and edify its listeners with its simple and intense style now donned by poets of many languages. I was introduced to haiku at the 2014 Ostukimi Moon Viewing Festival at Klyde Warren Park in Dallas, TX. Poets from all over the nation read straight-forward but titillating and thought-provoking poetry to a lawn spread audience under the luminous m ..read more

https://youtu.be/vIBR6IsYJyI Our attachment systems are biological responses that are formed long before we can choose with whom we will enter a relationship. Although our caregivers greatly affect the sort of attachment style we create, even our adult relationships can have a tremendous effect on and even completely change our attachment style. I've always noticed that I feel a bit suffocated when I start a new relationship and associate relationships with losing my freedom. I wanted to read ,Attached. because I thought its contents would be able to help me create a more reasonable perspectiv ..read more

Book Review: "Evidence of Satan in the Modern World" by Léon Cristiani

https://youtu.be/7joylly_AiE Exorcism, as a practice, although portrayed in entertainment, is widely viewed as religious folly performed by zealots of the past. However, is this age-old religious practice really as sensational and senseless as the box office would portray? I find Evidence of Satan in the Modern World by Léon Cristiani to be an educational read that sheds light on the ritual of expelling evil forces and why the ritual was deemed necessary during the 19th and 20th centuries. I discovered this book while reading a 1966 December 15 edition of The Watchtower in an article entitled ..read more
