Seared Cube Steaks
The English Kitchen

Seared Cube Steaks make for a delicious mid-week option for the family which take very little time to prepare and are quite inexpensive.  A steak dinner doesn't get much easier or tastier then these simple, yet flavor-filled steaks. Cube steak is something which I often pick up at my grocery store for several reasons. One, it is relatively inexpensive when compared to other red meat options.  Two, it cooks really quickly and if not over-cooked is always juicy and relatively tender.   In my local shop you can also get pork steaks done in this same way, tenderiz ..read more

Quick & Easy Cheesy Chicken & Potatoes (small batch)

This Quick & Easy Cheesy Chicken & Potatoes recipe I am sharing with you today is one that I book-marked from a reel I saw on Instagram.  The instructions were actually a bit vague, but it looked quite easy and promising.   The end result did look quite delicious so I decided to give it a go here in my own kitchen.  I adapted it to a small batch for only two to three people and added my own twist to it.  I think I also simplified it.   I did not see the need for browning the potatoes and the chicken in separate skillets.  Instead I ..read more

Traditional Scottish Clapshot

I was looking for a recipe for Tatties and Neeps the other day when I came across this recipe for Scottish Clapshot.  I found it on a page called Larder Love.   It sounded even better than Tatties and Neeps. In fact it sounded very similar to a dish I had grown up with. My  mother always cooked her turnips like this.  This is how we ate them the whole time I was growing up. Mashed together with potatoes. Mom always said that the potato mellowed out any bitterness that the turnip might have.     Yes, we called them turnips, when in all tru ..read more

Sweet & Sour Glazed Smoked Pork Chops
The English Kitchen

I have always had a special fondness for smoked pork chops. Back in the 1980's my then husband had been making lawn furniture for the garden out of cedar wood.  I can remember one time he threw the scraps onto the BBQ when we were cooking some pork chops.  Best pork chops ever!  (Not that that is the same thing as actually smoking chops because it isn't.) We also used to buy really delicious smoked pork chops at the 400 flea market in Southern Ontario at a Mennonite booth that sold a variety of meats, both fresh and smoked.  Best pork chops ever.   Th ..read more

Hello and welcome to my Sunday Meals of the Week Post.  Every Sunday I like to share with you all of the delicious main meals which I have cooked for myself and or enjoyed over the past seven days.  This helps me to keep myself accountable and I hope in some way it will also inspire you to want to cook some of the things I have enjoyed. As a person who finds themselves living on her own at this late stage in my life it has been a bit of a challenge.  I do not want to be a person who lives on takeaways or out of cans or frozen packets.  I have always enjoye ..read more

My sister is always trying new things and healthy things. She is quite an inspiration to me on that front!  I was at her place the other day and she said asked  me if I wanted to try one of these Peanut Butter Cookie Dough Energy Bites that she had made. I said sure, why not!  I  knew it would be healthy because almost everything she makes is healthy!  She's a superstar in that arena!   She got me one from the refrigerator. They did not look all that remarkable, but as soon as I took a bite, I fell in love!  These were amazing!  ..read more

Bread Machine Honey Wheat Oat Bread

I decided to dust off my bread machine today and bake a loaf of bread. I had not used it since before Christmas and thought it was about time I did! When my children were growing up (I have five children) we always had homemade bread in the house. My ex husband used to bake all of our bread when he was home.  He would make 12 loaves at a time.   Every week. And we never had any left over. He used his mother's recipe for white bread. It was beautiful bread. He made double loaves which were two balls of bread dough put together in a loaf tin and set to rise. The m ..read more

This pasta recipe that I am sharing with you today is for a pasta that cooks all in one pot, both the sauce and the spaghetti noodles.   There is no need to cook the pasta separately. It cooks right in that delicious tomato sauce. I  am all for shortcuts if I can find them, especially if they don't compromise on quality and taste, and this fabulous recipe compromises on neither of those things. You end up with perfectly cooked pasta and a delicious well seasoned and flavored tomato sauce.  I call this a win/win!   I discovered the recipe on a page c ..read more

Ranch Dressed Crushed Potatoes

I am really excited to be sharing a small batch recipe for Ranch Dressed Crushed Potatoes with you here today.  It is a recipe I had seen on Instagram last week that immediately drew my attention.  They had been paired with meatloaf which initially caught my eye, but then when I noticed the potatoes I was hook, line, and sinkered! The Potato is my most favorite of all the vegetables. Whenever I am asked what "one" thing would I have with me on a Desert Island, I am quick to answer, a bag of potatoes. You can make anything with a potato.  They are delicious and self ..read more

Here we are, another Sunday, another Meals of the week post. On Sundays I like to post all of the recipes for all of the main meals that I have enjoyed over the past seven days, along with the things I have enjoyed alongside of them. As a person who lives alone, it can be very tempting to not want to cook much, or to eat from cans and boxes, but that's not really very healthy or good for you. Ready meals are usually full of fat, sodium, preservatives and chemicals.   I don't want to be that person. Neither do I want to exist on sandwiches and bags of crisps. Occasionally ..read more
