Nest originally made by a family of neighbourhood red-shafted northern flickers. Photo by Perrin Gaugin In early October 2020, on a Saturday afternoon, I returned to my old, falling-down apartment building in Vancouver’s Mt. Pleasant neighbourhood. The city was worming its way across a weird borderline from quiet dread under glowering, late-summer blankets of smoke heaved up from forest fires further south, toward the more familiar dolor of leaden West Coast autumns. My slanting back porch and its tired vinyl envelope remained hidden from the avenue by a pair of sour cherry trees, which hold o ..read more

Due to Covid-19, many patterns have changed in our lives. The lockdowns in city centres—and the attendant quiet on normally busy streets—have created an unprecedented chance for urban animals to roam. Throughout the world, cities continue to spread out into the natural landscape, continuing to destroying ecosystems and habitats, while technology reshapes our existence. As a result, we’re seeing more animals moving into the urban core, mass extinction, and other animals determined not to give up their territories. As thoughts about viruses and disease transmission occupied my mind during the pa ..read more

In September 2019, I wanted to mimic the seasonal behaviour of the Eastern Grey Squirrelby collecting and burying Garry oak acorns. A walk through MEE-qan (Beacon Hill Park), Victoria BC led me to Iind a Garry oak meadow that pre-dates colonial times. While foraging for acorns beneath the trees, I noticed several dropped peafowl feathers. Slowly, the habitat came into focus. Above, a tree squirrel hurled nuts to the ground from atop a Garry oak tree. Below, a blue peacock, a species native to the Indian subcontinent, pecked at the nutmeat from cracked acorns scattered in the grass. Most of the ..read more
