Feedback wanted on my bow arm

Hi, I am learning Irish traditional music on the fiddle and am struggling with bowing from my elbow. My teacher told me I was using too much of my upper arm when bowing, so in this video I'm trying to focus on bowing from the elbow. Please ignore the intonation, rhythm etc. but I'd love to hear people's thoughts on my bow arm. Also, are there any exercises you would recommend to improve one's bow arm, or youtube videos? Thank you. submitted by /u/LukeKelly123 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Concert stress? (violist)

TLDR: I have a concert coming up in the next two weeks. Problem is I have to play in front of ALL the other string instruments in my music school and I'm by far the worst, and the reason is I've been playing for not even a full year. So basically I have to know the pieces (2) by heart. Well, job done but now my only problem is I have about a week to get it to sound clean and am nowhere near there. I sound like a dying elephant or smth and am TERRIFIED of embarrassing myself infornt of 50+ people. Any help? submitted by /u/fluffyfrenchfryfrog [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Hi guys so abit of background. I studied violin when I was in elementary all the way through my junior high years (around 5 years). But I stopped playing for years now. Recently I wanted to play again and continue my violin studies although I might have to do it alone. Surprisingly I still remember how to play but need to relearn alot of things. Now my previous violin is a Hofner size 3/4, the violin is already cracked by still playable. Though some people said that I should get a new 4/4. Should I get another Hofner or are there any other recommendations? Also there is an official store and ..read more

Stylized Instruments Onscreen?

Something I can't figure out for the life of me -- how do stylized instruments for aesthetic purposes work? I am an adult beginner (rounding the corner on Boccherini Minuet! Book 2 is fun!) and actually, a film-adjacent professional. But I've never been able to understand the process for instruments in, say, music videos where they're all supposed to look the same... An example is Beyonce's Academy Awards performance a few years ago for "Be Alive" -- the costumes and instruments are all intentionally made tennis-ball-neon. Obviously, this could be previously recorded with real instruments, an ..read more

Beginner learning the bow hold!

I have recently picked the violin back up and decided to start with the very basics to make sure I don’t develop bad habits. My question is about what my (online) teacher explained about bow holds. He mentioned that your pinky and thumb are there for balance and your index finger is meant for control. I noticed when he holds his bow horizontally with one hand his hand amazingly stays in the same beautifully curved position, whereas my pinky immediately straightens from the weight. Is this simply a matter of a weak pinky? I am able to practice curving once the bow rests on the violin, but it s ..read more

Not wanting the clearly best violin

Spent an hour and a half with my teacher today in a church testing about six violins. He played the violins in pairs and we would eliminate one from each pair, etc. Thoughout the testing we kept going back to one violin in particular that was extremely clear, precise, resonant, beautiful sounding, and very responsive to rapid bowing, and vibrato came it very clear. But when I came home and played with it it seemed kind of dry (just the note itself and no huge reverberation) and almost mute. I picked three violins that I loved the sound of over the one we picked at the church, because I could ..read more

Coming back from a neck injury. Does anyone know of a way to hold the violin without using the shoulder or neck? Some sort of a stand perhaps? submitted by /u/Effective_Elk1234 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more
