The Boston Jewish Film Festival, now celebrating its 32nd year, has gone virtual. (Another sign of the times, I guess…) Instead of enjoying a wide array of movies in a theatre, you can now stream them online. I find that every year they offer at least one must-see movie that I really enjoy. Offerings will include: “World premieres of international films, one-of-a-kind interactive conversations with filmmakers and guests, and a selection of narrative, comedies, documentaries and short films.” Please be aware that while all of the movies have a Jewish theme, some include graphic content and con ..read more

With so many of us separated from friends and family due to the pandemic, it’s more important than ever to reach out. I love to send and receive holiday cards. Paper is better than virtual, but E-cards are a good option for those who don’t want to spend money. Jewish Boston is offering free cards for Rosh Hashanah. There are 4 designs to choose from; I like the image above best. It will literally take less than a minute to personalize a card and let someone know that you care. North American interest in moving to Israel has had a huge increase. According to Nefesh B’Nefesh, they have received 900 applications for June 2020—the highest number ever recorded since the group was founded over 20 years ago. For those who don’t know, Nefesh B’Nefesh is basically the only group that coordinates North American Aliyah, so their numbers are a good reflection on current trends. I do not know of a single America or Canadian who has made Aliyah and not used them, and I mean none. They are a tremendous resource for anyone even contemplating the big move. Compared to June 2019, wh ..read more

Summer camps are entering the Zoom era, with some Jewish camps offering a virtual experience, due to Coronavirus. Online activities, especially for kids, can be a hit-or-miss opportunity. Along with virtual playdates and virtual schooling, so much is changing lately. As usual, the Jewish community is divided; some are glad to have any connection at all—even online—and others insist that it’s not really camp and offers no value. According to the Jewish Journal article, anyone who chooses to participate will find: “A daily schedule of arts and crafts, games and even sports, run by counselors an ..read more

High Rates of Cystic Fibrosis in Jewish Community

If you’re a member of the Ashkenazi Jewish community, your risk of carrying the gene that causes Cystic Fibrosis is 1 in 25. Folks, that statistic shocked me! Even worse: If both parents are carriers, children have a 1 in 4 chance of inheriting the disease. That is truly frightening, and quite frankly, is not well known. The Jewish Journal recently published an extensive article about Cystic Fibrosis—what it is, what treatment is available, obstacles that sufferers face, and advances that may lead to a cure. Many individuals were interviewed, and their experiences are absolutely heartbreaking ..read more

The littlest members of the family can get into the holiday spirit with a new collection from PJ Library—The 2020 Quick Guide to Celebrating Rosh Hashanah with Kids. With different sections for Under 5, Ages 5 and Up, and Tweens, there are ideas, crafts, activities, and book suggestions for the younger set. The most popular ones for my family were baking a round challah and creating honey-scented play dough. As usual, any book that PJ Library highlights is super. Tracy Newman has covered every Jewish holiday, Shabbat and life cycle events in her writing career. I can honestly say that all of ..read more
