Bob Minner on the Making of the Collings Traditional Builders Choice
Fretboard Journal
by Bob Minner
1w ago
The Collings D1A Traditional Builder’s Choice I am playing in the video isn’t even a prototype per se. It’s more of a “Let’s see what happens” guitar. In December 2022, I flew to Austin to spend a couple of days at the Collings shop and hang out with everyone. Steve Nall, affectionately known as Nully, is the head luthier now, having been elevated to that position with the retirement of longtime head luthier Bruce VanWart. Nully and I are great friends and insufferable guitar geeks. We were discussing, as we always do, the ever-elusive aspects and characteristics of certain ’30s vinta ..read more

On this week’s show, we have a candid chat with Seattle indie rock musician-turned-podcaster (Roderick on the Line, Omnibus) John Roderick. For the last several years, Los Angeles-based musician Ryan Richter has served as a touring guitarist for Dijon, Ryan Beatty, Lizzy McAlpine and others. Ryan tells us about how this multifaceted composition came to be (with a little help from a rolling capo ad on social media), the gear that he used on it, his touring rig ..read more

Life on the Fretboard: Derek Gripper
Fretboard Journal
by Michael Watts
3w ago
Derek Gripper plays Malian Kora music on a vintage Hermann Hauser classical guitar…and if that doesn’t get your attention, nothing will! John Williams himself describes feeling that this was, and, I quote, “absolutely impossible until I heard Derek Gripper do it.” So that’s pretty cool. We talk about his work translating the music of this beautiful African harp to the nylon string guitar, and the extraordinary instruments he has used in his quest to make the music in his head come to life including 8-string guitars, fanned frets and interchangeable magnetic fretboards. Yes, he has gone d ..read more

Happy to announce some truly special updates to our 2024 Fretboard Summit at Chicago’s legendary Old Town School. On Friday, August 23, we’re bringing back two very special artists who attended our earliest version of the Summit way back in 2015: Blake Mills and Joe Henry. Each will be performing a full set that evening. Expect surprises. The last time Blake played for us, he and Bill Frisell did a duo for the first time ever…an unforgettable Bob Dylan cover.
