It is with a heavy heart that after 12 Years of posting to my wildlife photography blog that I have decided to call it a day.I am currently having mobility problems and am finding great difficulty in getting around as I would like. It has indeed been a wonderful twelve years when I have taken many thousands of images of Lancashire's wonderful wildlife and put the best of these regularly on the blog.In those twelve years I have made 559 postings to my blog.I look back regularly through my work as a wildlife photographer and am very pleased at what I have achieved. It will remain as a leg ..read more

It has been another mixed week weatherwise with mostly dull and gloomy though dry days.Monday however was different with blue skies and strong winter sunshine. The perfect recipe for me to head off to Cockerham and Pilling again to see what was about. The first stop was down near the abbey at Cockerham. Here the main flock of whooper swans had moved to the fields near Lighthouse Cottage, apparently disturbed and moved by the farmer from their previous location. The 350 swans looked very nice in the sunshine. Also looking splendid were a pair of stonechats feeding in the set aside area close to ..read more

I paid another visit to Cockersand Abbey in the hope of getting better images of the snow buntings that were still around.Previously I did manage some shots but the buntings were very active in some very tussocky vegetation and it was tricky to photograph them.So on Tuesday last I decided to visit again. The weather was dry for a change with sunshine and a strong and cold wind from the north.I arrived around midday just as the tide was turning and uncovering the favoured feeding area below the ancient Abbey Cockersands Abbey was occupied ce ..read more

The weather recently has been awful with many wet and gloomy days. Not conducive at all to getting out with the camera. There were some drier and brighter spells and I made a few trips to my current hunting ground around Cockerham and Pilling. This time I have been concentrating on the smaller birds and have had some nice sightings. A few snow buntings turned up at Fleetwood and Cockerham and I was determined to get some images.I did eventually photograph the snow buntings at Cockerham Abbey but my timing was not good and it took a few attempts to get them.On one of the Cockerham trips I ma ..read more

As promised in my last post I am now showing images of the pink footed geese that are in the Pilling area and are feeding on the many potatoes left unharvested in the flooded fields. It was not easy to find the geese but I did eventually find reasonable numbers within range of the camera and am pleased with the results shown below. You will also see that I have included further images of the whooper swans. It has been an interesting experience looking for these winter visitors from Iceland and we are lucky here in Lancashire that these birds find the Lancashire mosslands so attractive.I un ..read more

Wonderful Whoopers

At this time of the year I look forward to the arrival of whooper swans and pink footed geese from their breeding grounds in Iceland. As last year the heavy autumnal rains had flooded many of the agricultural fields in the Pilling area. The lakes that had appeared are very attractive to Whooper swans and probably remind them of the lakes back home in Iceland. This area of Lancashire is famous for growing potatoes and following the floods many potatoes are unable to be harvested and are left for the swans and geese. This food supply keeps the swans and geese in the area and a visit to the Pil ..read more

Last week despite the very wet and stormy weather I did manage to get out with the camera. My main objective were the whooper swans and pinkfoot geese that had arrived to spend the winter months in Lancashire. My favourite area to see them is in the Pilling area.Eagland Hill is a favoured spot and I concentrated my efforts in that area.I did obtain some excellent images of the swans and geese but this post is about the thousands of starlings feeding on the farmland and a visit to a local barn owl. The numbers of starlings present was staggering and my images don't reall ..read more

Lancashire is currently in the highest zone of coronavirus restrictions. This will mean it is going to be difficult to obtain images as non essential travel is not encouraged and it may not be easy to provide new images for the blog. For the time being I will post images obtained before the recent restrictions. I heard of three spoonbills at a local RSPB Reserve at Hesketh Bank not too far from home. When I arrived I could see the spoonbills in the distance.Hesketh Out Marsh is a saltmarsh part of the larger Ribble Estuary Nature Reserve.A lot of work has been carried out over recent years ..read more

Now I am able to blog again I am bringing the blog up to date with some recent sightings.A trip to Lunesdale saw a small group of recently arrived whooper swans resting in the fields adjoining the confluence of the rivers Lune and Wenning at Hornby. My first sighting of whoopers this Autumn. I hadn't been to Leighton Moss RSPB for many months so one pleasant afternoon recently found me in the Morecambe Hide.It was very good for egrets,Great and Little.Apart from redshanks it was quiet for waders but three greenshanks flew in as I was leaving. It was quiet for birder ..read more
