CSO Planning Permissions The CSO have today 14th March 2024, published their latest planning permissions for Q4 2023 and a review of the year. Key findings include: An annual increase of almost 21% in the total number of dwelling units approved in 2023, up from 34,177 units in 2022 to 41,225 units in 2023. In 2022 an annual decrease of 20.5% was recorded. In 2023, the number of apartments granted planning permission rose by almost 29% when compared with 2022, while house approvals were up by more than 13%. Turnover and employment continue to increase across the construction sector, according to the Construction Industry Federation’s Quarter 1 Outlook Survey. The cost of labour and raw materials continues to put upward pressure on pricing across all sub sectors, with 68% of survey respondents experiencing a year-on-year increase in the cost of labour and 60% experiencing a year-on-year increase in the cost of raw materials. The Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage published the Sustainable Residential Development & Compact Settlements Guidelines for Planning Authorities on 15th January. This follows two public consultations during 2023. The Guidelines focus on sustainable residential development and the creation of compact settlements for urban and rural areas.
