I am a fresh PhD grad applying for a research scientist position and I made it to the final onsite interview for a small biotech (<30 employees). I will be flown out with lodging all paid for which I am taking it as a good sign. The interview is quite extensive with a full day of interviews ranging from Principal scientist (direct supervisor), SVP, coworker, senior scientist in the adjacent department, and more. What are some of the questions/interactions that I should be prepared for? I also have a 1hour seminar that I was told to give on my "background and expertise", what level of techn ..read more

Low salary for manufacturing associate I in the SF biotech hub?

Not sure if it's due to experience considering I only have 2 years of academia experience, but I'm currently moving onto the 3rd interview at a company for the Manufacturing Associate I role. The interviews have been great and was told that I'd be a "great candidate". However, I was actually told in the 1st phone interview that the pay for this position would be 52,000$. This was shocking considering its in SF. Would I offend the hiring manager if I were to negotiate with HR at the end? Was I suppose to be negotiating with the hiring manager in the first phone call? This will be my first job ..read more

Went from Research Associate 2 to Lab Assistant… better than unemployment?

Hi Everyone, I had started off my biotech career as an RA to an RA2 in Fermentation for 3 years and after company layoffs, worked as a Discovery RA2 at a different company where I did a lot of R&D work pertaining to food science, biochemistry, and high throughput screening for about two years. Sadly, I had been let go in March 2023 due to company wide layoffs and had struggled to find another role of that level with my skill set. The markets been rough and so after about ten months of searching I decided to take a large pay cut and much lower level position as a Lab Assistant rather than ..read more

Separation Package- what to expect?

Anyone have any experience with receiving a separation package? Not to be confused with a severance package due to a company wide layoff. Long and short, been with company several years meet/exceed expectations on all reviews, one quiet literally last month (annual). Been through several layoffs at company, now I'm caught having 70% work day dedicated to lower level day to day task items and expectations for higher level projects have never been more lofty. Needless to say, trying to squeeze blood from a stone. I was hit with a PIP today that's pretty baseless; not starting DR when OOO, not c ..read more

Competitive Coworkers

So I started at this company a few months ago and it’s my first industry job, in which my role is a Validation Associate. I basically test our products and approve them but I’ve come to notice that my coworkers are very competitive especially when it comes to the results that we get. They’ll act passive aggressive whenever my tests go well but glee whenever I get some weird results or mess something up. It also doesn’t help that I am the only hire on the team with just a Bachelors whereas everyone else has a Masters, they are reluctant to train me on the techniques and such (techniques relate ..read more

Looking to apply for Manufacturing or Process Development roles but am open to QC as well. No, I did not want to do an MBA right out of college but my professor switched universities really late. Hiring freezes and a TA position offer to pay for almost all of the MBA swayed me. Should I hide the MBA degree when applying as I could be considered overqualified? Should I hide the master's as well and have an oddly long gap after the undergrad? submitted by /u/Ok_Anybody617 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Perks of working in biopharma R&D?

Let's ignore ones personal interest towards the actual content of the work. When thinking about everything else related to the job, such as stress, work-life balance, job security, job availability, salary, benefits, etc., why would anyone want to work in R&D? To me it seems like there are a lot of cons and very little perks. Positions are rare, they are the first to get axed when times get tough, high stress from requirements of actually coming up with innovative stuff, long and irregular hours due to experiments, and the pay is bad even within the biopharma field. Sometimes I find mysel ..read more
