What can I do to ensure that life continues in the pond water I put in a jar?

There is no pond near where I live. So I can't get pond water regularly to examine it under a microscope. I want the life in the pond water I collect to not end. There are live aquatic plants on the surface of the water in the jar and a very thin layer of pond soil at the bottom. I open the lid of the jar twice a day to let oxygen into it. I keep the lid closed to prevent the water from evaporating and I do not put the jar in a place exposed to direct sunlight. Apart from these, how can I contribute to preventing the nutritional values in the water from decreasing? Thanks. submitted by /u/ic ..read more

Hi, I’m working on an unknown project and this is a gram stain of my unknown bacteria from a PEA plate. I see the abundant gram negative coccobacilli but there also seems to be some gram positive coccus inside (?) some of the gram negative coccobacilli. The quality is terrible but the morphology of the gram positive stain was perfectly spherical. Is this just some structural component getting stained purple, or maybe the cell is dying and the stain is getting through the outer plasma membrane and staining the cell wall? I’d appreciate any help or guidance! submitted by /u/mysthicque [visit ..read more

The H5N1 bird flu outbreak in US dairy cattle may have begun months earlier than thought, an analysis of genetic data suggests. It is unclear how the cows became infected, but a likely source is feces or other secretions from an infected wild bird.

Does anyone know what this could be? Appears to have contaminated select tissue samples treated with basic solution (less prominent in acidic). Image is using 40x objective. Sorry for quality.

So Ive seen a few posts about having a BS in bio/micro but would rather not get a masters or PhD. I do want to, but im not sure what i should look into more. I dont want to get too passionate about a certain field just for it to not be easy to find a job with. Also, I dont have my BS yet so I have time to think about it submitted by /u/EEukaryotic [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

I was under the impression that Staphylococcus aureus would have a weak BEAA result, is the posted result unusual? Furthermore, would it be possible for Staphylococcus aureus to produce these results or am I possibly misidentifying?
