It's Time To Say Goodbye
Mr Home Maker

It's time to say goodbye folks The Nanny State of Australia has struck again. With ASIC's new rules going live regarding what is deemed advice-giving (in Australia) when it comes to talking about investing & money, means that I can no longer talk about money, investing and investing products the way I do or the way I want to.   In fact, many of my posts over the years use language in them that ASIC probably would decide is "advice giving" (despite me always clearly stating that I am not a financial adviser etc).  If my posts have had any probability of you going ..read more

Jot down when you last paid the electricity bill 2. Jot down when you last paid your water bill 3. Jot down when you last paid your phone/cell bill 4. Jot down when you last paid for groceries 5. Maybe even never?  Don't worry, you're not alone as most people do not pay themselves first (if ev ..read more

We Went Solar
Mr Home Maker

After receiving an astronomical energy bill at the end of last winter, I threw a complete wobbly. Lost it. Had a meltdown. Had a Dad crisis. $1000 for the quarter?!  Insane.   So it was time to bite bullet and do some research on solar. After a couple of months of intense research I was actually surprised how non-cost effective many of the solar solutions were for mainstream householders. I was initially interested in battery storage and going as close to off-grid as possible in a suburban environment. The cost was astounding unless you had the skills to do it yourself (I d ..read more

A New Kitchen at House of Simple
Mr Home Maker
by

So the kitchen in our 43 year old home was the original. Think 1978 faux laminate pine cupboard doors with an apple green laminate bench top – clearly all the rage in ’78. The underlying chipboard was swollen and rotting with 42 years of absorbed moisture (cockroach heaven), the benchtops had clear evidence of hot pot burn marks, food colour staining, sun fading and oh-so-scratched. The layout was truly atrocious including a pantry in which only half the shelves were accessible and four corner cupboards that required me to roll myself up like a hedgehog to reach whatever was up in th ..read more

Coming Up For Air

Hi folks I'm coming back up for air.  Over the last 12 months I've been thrust into the heart of COVID 19 response via my job and now that we are out of the worst of it (did I just jinx it saying that?) I need to get back to simple activities that sustain me. I abandoned Blogger for the sirens call of WordPress, but honestly have found WordPress just as difficult and fiddly to post easily and quickly ..... sigh (but it is much prettier!). Do I come back here and carry on as if nothing has happened or do I persist with WordPress. Dunno. But I'm here today. We have been doing so mu ..read more

Eight Paydays Till Christmas
Mr Home Maker

Hi Folks If you get paid fortnightly, then it is only 8 paydays till Christmas. Christmas would have to be the most auspicious time for budgets getting smashed, credit cards going into meltdown and relationships stretched over money.  Please do not be one of these statistics this year. How much do you need to spend on Christmas this year?  Divide that amount by 8 and keep that aside from each pay from now till Christmas and you will be able to achieve a credit card free holiday period.  I can clearly remember our first credit card free Christmas back in 2012 - we were euph ..read more

Hi folks Whoosh!  Did you hear that? That was the sound of six weeks flying past since I have written here – gosh. The view from a recent picnic spot overlooking Port Stephens NSW Plenty has been going on here at our place, so grab a quick cuppa and I’ll fill you in. We have an old shade cloth covered gazebo area outside the back door which was pretty wasted space, so we decided to get the beams checked out and then cover it in tinted sheeting. This allows us to eat outside in all weather and gives us an alternate living area to relax in too. We employed a r ..read more

The Power Of Half
Mr Home Maker

Half - this is a powerful success principle as we reduce our expenses and consumption and in turn increase our levels of unspent money. Here are some basic examples of how the power of 'half' works: Use half as much shampoo and see what happens. Then try half as much again until a minimal viable amount is reached.   Halve the amount of laundry liquid you use - see what happens. Again aim for a minimal viable amount that works for you. Halve the amounts of unplanned trips in the car - plan trips instead to incorporate errands with other necessary commuting Halve the amount on ..read more

Hi folks - I hope the new year is panning out OK for you all. With January half gone it is probably time to smooth down the proverbial pinny and look 2019 squarely in the face. Basil and mint flourishing in the courtyard Yesterday we were talking about food and food budgeting and menu planning and Mrs HM said " I think this year you can take charge of the food budget and shopping".  Boom.  There it is.  I know this is going to be much more challenging than it looks on the surface, but I am ready to give it my best.  I know I'll be asking a zillion questions ..read more

Holiday Food From Scratch
Mr Home Maker

Hi Folks At our place we have made all our food for the holidays from scratch. So delicious, frugal and full of love and detailed attention to flavour. I'll let the pictures do the talking now - as you can see it has been a finger-food holiday period as here in Australia it is a sweltering 38 degrees Celsius this week.  We just could not come at hot sit-down dinners this year. Lemon  tarts topped with raspberries and  blueberries Chocolate tarts with cream Fruit pies, almond puffs, rocky road, peanut butter balls and mint slice Bailey ..read more
